A report has emerged claiming that Nintendo's Wii U will cost at least $300 at its U.S launch later this year.

Montreal-based culture and entertainment site Forget the Box is citing "sources closely involved with manufacturing and distributing Nintendo products" for its story, which has been picked up by various mainstream media outlets. The source says that Wii U's costs of manufacture are $180 with an additional $50 for the controller.

Forget The Box's source is quoted, "Cutting production costs to maximize profits is Nintendo's main concern with the Wii U. They are cutting costs in the Wii U's hardware to build back confidence in investors. Nintendo wants investors to view Wii U as a less risky proposition."

The source added, "Nintendo chose an economical GPU and CPU that could keep up with the performance of today's current consoles, but keep hardware costs down to maximize profits. Nintendo got a bargain price on the custom GPU and CPU that the Wii U uses. There is a bigger focus on downloadable content, applications, video content, digital distribution, and services to create a stream of revenue. Investors will be ecstatic with the news."

The original Wii launched at $250 in the U.S, as did Nintendo's 3DS.

I read something before it was going to be $250, so $300 sound likely and be a great price. But going cheap on the hardware has me a bit worried.

If we all team up and decide not to buy the Wii U for a whole month after its release, we'll get a cheaper deal with a no-sale discount, xD
But people don't think like that, :P They want it when it's hot so we cough up the $300+ instead of a cheaper deal...

Anyway, what am I saying? I'm one of those guys that wants it after its release, :P lmao.
$300 sounds like a good price.

good idea but could give Nintendo the thought of hanging up the console making towel for good.

I think it was always going to cost more than the Wii, i don't mind. I haven't decided whether to buy it yet but hopefully once i see a few games in action, it'll make me want it. :)

There will be a price drop at some point and to be honest it will probably come quite quickly, not sure whether the console will sell a lot when it first comes out.

I'm not a fan of the price either, but think of it like this: The Wii started at $250 when the economy wasn't that great, and it isn't much better now, so it's went up $50 because of inflation, so technically it's fair. Plus the hardware must cost quite a bit more.

If the Wii U, which BETTER get a name change and most likely will, costs $300, there goes even attempting to appeal to hardcore gamers. We have our Xbox's and PC's, so there's no room for hardcore gaming there.
