Same characters! Looks like the same plot! New animation!

What is the point of this? I am all for the re-dubs, because localization was young and insecure back then, and if you watch the dubs and the subs you'll get two entirely different stories with wildly different characterizations of, well, of characters and relationships and events.

But I don't get why this whole overhauling re-make. I can appreciate clearer colors, and more frames per second I guess, and adventurous "camera angles", but...I don't know...why? I guess I'll find out, because I'm flabbergasted and curious and Sailor Moon was a part of my childhood, but I don't know...

They still don't look fourteen. Actually, these new ones look a little...noodle-y? Is it just me?

I hope it's not a gritty reboot. Does Japan do that sort of thing? I mean, the "dark subversion" aspect of Puella Magi Madoka Magica was done by accident (according to the creator), and done really really really well.

Personally I was just in the middle of the first season of Sailor Moon when I started my break. (To keep it short in case you haven't read about it before: I'm on a 6-month break from anime for several reasons. It's tough, but I'll manage) And I must say that it felt pretty... Silly. I had watched Cardcaptor Sakura before I watched Sailor Moon, and even CCS felt like a "little-girls-show", but Sailor Moon was just even worse. It felt cliché, weird, and on top of everything, made for children. I don't generally think it's a bad thing that it's made for children, as I personally also like to watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but this one just felt quite silly...

The new Sailor Moon feels like something else. I mean, Usagi doesn't sound like a crybaby anymore, and they certainly don't look like little schoolgirls. And uhm, if you listen to the music of that that promo, you can hear what? Guitar solo, hard-rock/metal. I don't think little girls listen to things like that... So what's the deal with this new reboot? I think it's Sailor Moon, but with a different demographic. They're trying to sell in with males, or atleast some older females, and I think it might actually be quite sucessful. I'll watch it either way, and I definately enjoy watching girls-shows... But it does feel a lot like they are trying to sell in with the males, with the guitar solos and everything. Maybe I'm just thinking too much about stereotypes, but yeah... That's what I think.

Seinen Moon, then?

They never looked like schoolgirls, in my opinion. The old version had them all leggy like supermodels with hems barely down to their See-You-Next-Tuesdays, and that seems to have been a draw for the male audiences. Some American pop-rock boy band even plugged them in a song, calling them, "boom anime babes that make me think the wrong thing".

Even if it had a particular target demographic, it's still classic enough that pretty much everybody would know it. It might be a Brave New World of Brony, too, nowadays--but it still seems to me as if the shojou/josei demographic has more expectation to be more accepting of and neutral towards media that's originally for the shonen/seinen demographic, so even if this is Seinen Moon that would make it watchable for everyone too. Except those who are averse to anime at all.

This new anime is suppose to be based exactly like the manga in both look and storyline. So if the trailer is true to what it's showing it's going to be like watching the manga.

I'm looking forward to getting the full story this time when I watch the anime.

^ I don't understand why they chose 3D instead of the more classical animation style, honestly, I've seen a lot better  Still, I'm gonna watch the reboot. Sailor Moon was one of the first anime series I saw as a kid so I'm curious what opinion does the older me have about the plot and all.

Here is the transform scene (44 seconds in):

And dear god they went CGi on this, what the hell?! Also if you can find it, the opening has been leaked as well and it's awesome.
Thanks for posting! Hey, this new cartoon has a great soundtrack. The old transformation music was rocking enough, but this one... Heavenly choir! Electric guitar!

And sweeping animated angles! The noodle-y movements are more obvious here, like, wow, that wrist looks like one of the Shadows from Shin Megami Tensei: Persona.

I guess I should give some kudos to the new one being less sexy like they're not sexualizing a schoolgirl? But she's still made of noodle.

At least she looks more empowered with all the camera movement, it's more like she's gonn' get stuff DONE to DEATH instead of just "ooh, pretty magic will dress her up, while she just stands there and poses like a doll"!

Unless they repeat that very long sequence every single time she transforms, which became a running joke in the old anime version, that the transformation sequences take so long and the monster's just...there.

I like that this one will follow the manga more closely, but style wise I think the new ones are a bit too... what Elly said, noodly looking. I like the intro and was looking forward to the transformation and the Blam! - CGI. Doh well, hopefully it won't be used that much in the show.

It's the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon, and with such a huge fan base still going strong, why not make a reboot?

The original anime had a lot of filler episodes, didn't follow the manga perfectly (though I wouldn't call them out on it - anime is an adaptation of the manga, which doesn't have to follow it to the T), and the dub cut out a lot of information from the original. This time, they're redoing it so it can follow the official story line more precisely, and they want to cut down on all that extra junk that was original thrown into the mix.

I'm personally very excited for this reboot. Sailor Moon was my first anime I've ever watched, and back then I didn't even know it was anime. It brings back a lot of good memories from my childhood, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turns out! Only a few more days until it premieres...

Eh, not entirely sure I'm a fan of the new animation style. Might be the overly slender characters.
In any case, even though I was never much of a huge Sailor Moon fan I will certainly give this a bit of a gander just out of curiosity and  a bit of nostalgia.

Like others, not sure on that CGI for the transformation.

the animation and art style makes this series appears exactly how it appears in the manga, excluding the CGI of course.

You're right. I went back to the manga recently to reread it, and I noticed all of the characters had exaggerated proportions. Their legs, for example, are like giraffe legs! How do they even walk on those?

I recently saw the sequence for Sailor Moon's transformation sequence, and she had those exact kind of legs (and arms).. but this time, they were all noodle-y. o_O It was kind of funny to watch them flail everywhere in the animation like that. XD

So having watched the first three Sailor moon episodes of the 2014 series, I thought I give some thoughts on it.

First off, the opening. It's pretty great and well done (despite the use of CGI models in some places but they do look good.) though great I don't feel it beats the original opening from the first series. Overall the series so far as great OST.

The style of the anime looks beautiful and looks like they gave life to the manga this anime is based off of. Once again though, I feel it don't beat the original look of the first series which kind of has a timeless look.

And once again I must bash the awful choice of making the transform sequences CGI. They are not done right and lack any beauty that they should have. and before you get your panties into a twist again this is how the sequences should resemble:

Example one

Example two

But the Mars transformation was better than the first two while I completely dislike Mercury's stance afterwards (she looks like she is giving off a fat pose or something.)

To make my point, this should be a beautiful cell shaded anime series (with the break cards looking awesome) and CGI shouldn't be used in the way it should be. I know CGI can look great (like in Arpeggio of Blue Steel) but they haven't gotten to the point to animate it to keep it looking good.

Overall the series is off to a good start and I think fans are liking it. Though I do hope they get to the point they can release a new episode every week or we'll all be watching this series till we turn grey.
