Mass Effect 3 will allow users to pursue same-sex relationships, regardless of whether they play as a male or female Commander Shephard.

Casey Hudson, Mass Effect 3's Executive Producer, has confirmed on his Twitter account that Mass Effect 3 will allow both gay and lesbian romances to blossom.

Hudson said he was "Happy to confirm [that Mass Effect 3] supports wider options for love interests [including] same-sex for [male and female] characters, reactive to how you interact [with] them in-game."

While a same-sex encounter with Kelly Chambers was open to those who opted to play as a female Shephard in Mass Effect 2, similar options have so far been unavailable to those playing as a male Shephard.

As with all relationships in the Mass Effect franchise, they are likely to be optional, and will need to be actively pursued by the player in order to be experienced.

Mass Effect 3 is scheduled for release in early 2012.

I wonder if gay hate will affect game sales?

I don't know what to think here. It all depends on the context of the relationships. Question is, are they here as it will actually give an in depth exploration of the characters or is it just there for the sake of being there as was the case with Dragon Age 2's or Fable 2's relationships. But knowing how well Mass Effect has been put together with nothing being added hastily I like to think it is the first reason and look forward to seeing how well the game addresses the issues of homosexuality and bisexuality.

thank you for posting a good reply instead of just swearing & having anger issues like the post above yours,

back to the main subject: i think it is interesting how this topic has crept into video games,

it was only a matter of time :o

I think it is excellent that LGBT issues are now being explored in a more mature manner in video games and it won't be long before we have a game where the whole focus is on a character struggling with one of these issues. Persona4 has given us a glimpse of this as well

I wasn't being serious, but I do hate it when people are ignorant. >_>

It's still a serious issue though and an issue the industry needs to explore in more depth. The games industry at present seems to be afraid to seriously address LGBT issues in video games and so either completely avoid the issue or handle it in such a ham-handed manner that it just fuels the argument that we can't take serious matters in a mature manner which reflects badly on us as both players of games and also for the industry professionals who create them.

yes very ignorant, and i hate it when people post meaningless posts JUST to disagree with the topic starter, so we can agree to disagree?

based on your post history it seems you are quick to throw judgement but then most of the time you never back it up,

you need to be able to read and learn instead of being top poster,

:hammer:

As much as I agree with the above post I feel we should move back to the topic lest an argument start and I am in no mood for argument unless it is a spirited debate about the issue of LGBT and relationships in video games :)

I have backed my info up when I needed to, and so your saying that hating on certain people (i.e. gay) is fine?

And I'm sure the LGBT will be happy, at the very least mixed.

Eh, personally. I think it's a good thing that it's being incorporated into the game, but it's not gonna be the selling point for me.

It's still going to be a great game. You should check out Mass Effect 1 and 2 first though; they are for PC by the way.

I think it's safe to say that a controversial subject such as this is going to be in safe hands and is not going to be exploited in the stereotypical childlike fashion so nerds can see lesbian scenes and get Mass Erect

LOL

yes that does seem to be the problem: finding a mature way to introduce these topics without scaring away regular gamers, meanwhile not making it so lighthearted that it seems like a joke,

:S

I have been saving that overused joke for a while now and am amazed no one else said it :P

On a serious note though I think it will be an issue games will continue to face until the following things happen

1. Games are accepted as a universal form of mass media like television and do not receive special treatment purely on the grounds that they are games
2. Our existing community needs to grow up a bit and stop sniggering at any risqué scene presented to them. It is actually gotten to the point of being really embarrassing

It's the way they handled it though. The outcry over the supposed nudity was what sold half the copies of the original, then the second sold on the realisation that Mass Effect was actually an awesome game

Actually I have never played Mass Effect but I have the second one and look forward to starting it. I just know how well these have been received plus my friends all love it and that is generally a bigger thumbs up for me than what critics say. I can't always trust professional reviewers...
