Though the idea that AMD would be acquired by any company is nothing less than a wild notion, word today is that one of the larger companies in just such a position may make such a move. Or make an attempt, anyway. Word from Korea today is that Samsung may have the clout - and the cash - to buy out AMD. Not to dismantle them, by any means, but to assimilate them into their own unit. What a monster that'd end up being.

AMD being bought by Samsung sound like bad news for gamers since it could possibly mean that AMD will mainly make mobile CPUs to get installed on Samsung smartphones, tablets, laptops, and Google Chromebooks while AMD stop making Desktop CPUs, APUs, and video cards which are found on PCs, Gaming PCs, and all the current generation game consoles which use AMD APUs, and video chips in the Wii U.

If Samsung decide to  make AMD stop making APUs if Samsung buys AMD, there maybe no new game consoles being made with AMD chips because AMD is no longer making APUs for game consoles, budget computers, and laptops.

Sony should of stuck to using their Cell Processor chips which were used in the PS3, and Microsoft should of picked Intel chips for the Xbox One instead of switching to AMD APU processors where there are no new AMD APUs being made if Samsung buys AMD, and decide to use AMD staff to design and make mobile chips for smartphones and tablets instead of non-mobile devices like game consoles, desktop computers, and laptops.

That's unlikely to happen because if AMD stops making desktop CPUs, APUs and video cards, Intel will have the monopoly, and there is an antitrust law out there that prohibits companies to not have any form of competition.

I doubt that this will ever happen.

VIA Processors also makes x86 CPUs, and video chips for PC. Although, VIA is not as big as AMD, but VIA is not seem to having money problems like AMD which is not doing as well these days compared to the 90s to 2000s.

Nvidia, Matrox, VIA,  also makes video cards, and video chips.

Nvidia, Samsung, and other companies also makes mobile CPUs, and video chips which are mostly used on smartphones, tablets, and some laptops.

I don't see this happening really, someone in the courts will shut it down.

I agree with Demon on this one. Also, I have never heard of VIA processors. Like, literally, never. If you go to eBay and filter the computers by CPU, there are only various models of Intel and AMD ones. No VIA anywhere in the list.

VIA processors are sold with the motherboard/circuit board attached. VIA CPU are also usually pre-installed on computer, and they don't sell directly to consumers in the form of a chip you can buy from sites like Amazon or eBay. There are cheaper Mini PCs, tablets, and settop box which use VIA chips as the CPU.

There is also MCST which make x86 Processors according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_x86_manufacturers

AMD and Intel are just the two companies where it sells standalone CPUs to consumers who want to install and upgrade their own CPU on their desktop or laptop PC.
