Reaching out for the support of game developers, Samsung said today that it is constantly developing new game technologies for its smartphones, and it expects mobile performance to surpass that of the PlayStation 4 game console by 2020.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphone already surpasses the graphics performance of the Xbox 360 video game console, said Samsung’s Jonas Gustavsson, speaking at the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco. That's pretty good, but by then the PS4.5 or PS5 will have even larger numbers.

I agree the PS4.5 or PS5 will have higher numbers.

I think tablets in 2020 may have performance which is almost as fast as the PS4.5, and PS5 because a tablet is a bigger device than a smartphone, so it can fit bigger, and faster parts with more features into the case. There are also some tablets like the Microsoft Surfacebook tablet which has cooling fans which let the CPU and video chip run faster without overheating.
 
Interesting that they apparently believe that technical development is a linear function. I don't think it works like that, but then again it's only 4 years, but it sounds very decent at least, that they catch up to a gaming console in such a rapid fashion.
 
I would say I really, really doubt this. Now the time will come, that's for sure - I mean, we are playing our PS1 games on our phones now, but surpassing the most powerful consoles within four years? Heh, try to get to PS2 level in that time, and you might have a viable target.

There is just so much more hardware in the consoles of today, that the leaps in technology won't be large enough. Not in that timeframe.

The problem is that most developers are not going to keep up. Yes, Samsung may be able to do it for their newest line of phones, but there are a ton of their older phones out there, and more so there are other manufactures. As a game developer, it is hard to justify developing a game that can only be played on a small segment of the cell phones out there, especially mobile games which do not have a big price tag, but instead rely on making a tiny bit of money from a huge number of players. If you could charge $30 for an install on the best cellphone out there, then maybe you would tempt some developers. But for most mobile games, you literally make about $.05 per install if you are lucky.

There are in-game purchases like Virtual money, DLC, items, and character's clothing which can help make back some of the money which the developer spent on the game. A lot of free popular games like Clash of Clans, Candy Crush Saga, Asphalt 8, and many free Gameloft games rely on in-app purchases, and in-game ads to make money.

Developers can also use Crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, or collect donations with Paypal to see if there are enough people who are willing to crowdfund a mobile game.

I think some free and opensource games like OpenArena, Tux Racer, Assault Cube etc rely on donations, and volunteers to help create the game.

Its possible but I don't think it will succed.By 2020 maybe PS5 will be out and it will be a lot better than any smartphone in terms of power.It will take some time untill we will be able to play GTA V on a phone
 
I'm not sure if this can happen. I don't doubt that Samsung can pull some impressive numbers, but to go up against Sony and say they will surpass Sony is absurd. It's a good goal to put forth though! Let's see what happens.
 
There would be new faster technology in 2020, so it is possible that Samsung devices will be as fast as the PS4.

I think most current smartphones are now faster than the PS2, and the PS2 was released in 2000 which was only 16 years ago.

Sorry if I didn´t say it correctly. You are right, all of those games have tremendous success with cash-shop models, and even in-game video ads can be profitable. But that wasn´t my point. My point is that those games have 10 million players, and cash-in on maybe 3% of players that actually spend money. If you develop your mobile game for the very best mobile device like mentioned in this article, you are never going to get 10 million players. Mobile game developers are very aware that they must keep their games very light and available on older models in order to get to a significant enough of players to where that 3% can pay the bills.

Every game you mentioned can be played on phones that are 3 generations old.

Some mobile games like Asphalt 8 have different quality settings like Very High, High, Medium, and Low which users can adjust in the settings. Game developers can make their game playable on older phones by setting the default video setting to low, medium, or auto adjust based on the performance of the phone. More intensive gamers who own faster phones can adjust the video quality setting to high or very high.

I think for some categories of games like First Person Shooters, Racing, and RPG, gamers will want to buy good looking games with good graphics, and maybe more willing to pay higher prices for better games. More people are also owning faster phones thesedays.

At the moment I have GTA San Andreas, Vice City and Liberty City Stories playing smoothly on my iPhone and what makes it more contradictory to your statement is that they are ported to mobile with improved visuals, resolution and framerate. This means that we have long surpassed the PS2's capabilities and what you all need to understand is that mobile processing power is increasing ridiculously fast. A lot of smartphones today have 2GHz + octa core processors and 6GB of RAM. 6 Gigabytes! My laptop doesn't have that much. There are also devices such as the Asus Zenfone with 256GB of flash storage.

One year ago 4GB of RAM was absurd for smartphone standards. Samsung's next Note device is rumored to have 8GB. That's around 1000 times more RAM than the PS2 has storage. Smartphones evolve a lot faster than any other computing device because they are and forever will be in demand by the majority of the world's population as they are pretty much key to modern man's survival.

Anyway, apart from all that mumbo jumbo, I see it being possible for PS3 (maybe PS4?) quality gaming to become reality on mobile devices by 2020, even if growth rate doesn't continue the way it does. The only reason this hasn't already happened is because game development is more focused on generic cash cow crap like adjectivey noun (e.g Crossy Road) and verb of noun such as Clash of clans and Clash of Kings and the other 10 000 rip offs. Mobile game developers mainly care more about money than making good games.

What Samsung say may very well be true, but in twenty years time? Surely by then Sony will have moved the PlayStation technology onwards and upwards by then aswell and PlayStation 4 technology won't be anything to behold.

I understand what they're saying, and they're trying to say to people that mobile technology is moving at an ever increasing pace, but to say that in twenty years time it will be as good as a PlayStation 4, I don't think is the right way to go about it.
 
Wow, that's amazing! I think that mobile gaming is going to play a bigger part in the gaming world as time goes on, because phones and tablets are so portable and they're things that people often have with them anyways. With an actual console, you're constricted to playing at home. I can't wait to see how mobile games evolve and improve in the future.
 
I know about CPU/Processors which uses light to process information, so they may run faster than Electrical Based processors which uses electricity from wires. If there are mobile CPU which uses light to processes information, a mobile CPU could be faster than the PS4 CPU which uses electricity. I think light is also more power efficient and generates less heat than electricity-based CPUs of today.

Mobile gaming is more enjoyable if you use a wireless Bluetooth controller, or keyboard to play games. But, touchscreen controls are not as good as a real controller and keyboard.
