An exploding battery from such a large phone like the Samsung Galaxy Note sounds painful. At least, it did not exploded when he was using has phone, or while sitting on top a pile of paper, or a book which can catch fire, and burn down a house if no one puts out the fire when people are sleeping or out.

Why in the world wasn't the battery inside the phone? who walks around with just a phone battery in their pocket?

The battery might of slip out of the phone because the front cover fell off, and the battery slid offf the battery holder on the phone.

The man might of want to conserve power when they are not using their phone by removing the battery since a phone still uses a little bit of power in Standby, and off mode to receive calls, and other features.

I read some people carry an extra battery for their phone to power it when the other battery in its phone is dead.

Some people remove the battery, so they can't be tracked espiecally if their phone have a GPS features. Some teens with protective parents might remove the battery, so their parents can't use a GPS program to locate them by tracking their phone with GPS.
