Come July 7th, the SCI FI Channel will be no more – sort of. The sixteen year old cable network is changing its name this summer, to Syfy.

In their press release, SCI FI, ahem, Syfy, say, "By changing the name to Syfy, which remains phonetically identical, the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider and more diverse range of imagination-based entertainment including fantasy, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure, as well as science fiction. It also positions the brand for future growth by creating an ownable trademark that can travel easily with consumers across new media and non-linear digital platforms, new international channels and extend into new business ventures. "

The network's new tagline will be "Imagine Greater."

Says the network President, Dave Howe, "While continuing to embrace our legacy and our core audience, we needed to cultivate a distinct point of view with a name that we could own that invites more people in and reflects our broader range of programming. Syfy allows us to build on our 16 year heritage of success with a new brand built on the power that fuels our genre: the Imagination. Syfy ushers in a new era of unlimited imagination, exceptional experiences and greater entertainment that paves the way for us to truly become a global lifestyle brand."

When SCI FI makes the switch to Syfy on July 7th, it will do so with the debut of their new series Warehouse 13 and the return of Eureka.

The Hollywood Reporter has an interview with Howe which elaborates a bit more on the change, as he explains that on one hand it does have to do with an attempt to broaden their audience. Said Howe, "We love being sci fi and we're still embracing that. But we're more than just space and aliens and the future – the three things most people think of when they think of 'sci fi.'"

Branding was also a major component behind the change, with Howe explaining, "We're going to have upwards of 50 Sci Fi Channels in various territories and yet you cannot trademark 'Sci Fi' anywhere in the world. A new logo design would not solve that particular challenge. We needed a brand name that was own-able, portable and extendable."

For longtime SCI FI Channel fans wary of this change, Howe remarked, "Our core audience will use it an opportunity to question our motives -- they always do. But what we're embracing is the total sci-fi landscape – fantasy, paranormal, action-adventure, mystery ... it's imagination-based entertainment."

as long as they keep an-monday, I don't care what they do.

Seems weird to me. Sci Fi to SyFy. I don't see why they didn't just rename it to Sci Fy. That would be better I believe. What the heck has S and ends with y? I know what they are aiming for is Sci Fantasy instead of Science Fiction.

I like Sci-Fi better then Sy Fy since Sci-Fi seems easier to remember and more widely use.

I guest, they want to be different.
