The London Police raided a citizen's home for possession of devkit consoles, including those from Microsoft (e.g. Xbox), Nintendo, and Sony. SEGA hired multiple contractors to clear out its office prior to relocating in London, with those contractors and subcontractors being tasked, we're told, with getting rid of the devkits and consoles. In at least one instance, those were taken to a scrapyard and then sold to a reseller, who arranged to sell a lot worth $82,000 USD (61,000 GBP) to the Video Game Preservation Museum. Hiring a PI firm, SEGA coordinated with Fusion 85 and London City Police to raid the home of the reseller, seizing the devkits. In an email erroneously sent to GamersNexus by a waste removal contractor, though, we learn that it may not be theft at hand, but rather, corporate negligence by SEGA or the waste contractors.

Technically the guy didn't commit any crime as he took the discarded devkit from a scrapyard. Basically sega just made the guy a scapegoat. The police investigation is still ongoing...

What a shame Sega, you're a better company than Nintendo when it comes to these things! It's stupid that they're doing this, prototypes should be preserved and if they really didn't want consumers to have this stuff they should have either sent the devkits to another Sega headquarters or sent them ex employees. Sending them to a scrap yard was stupid too, at that point it should be fair game who gets it.
