So I managed to get hold of a pristine white Dreamcast last year or so to add to my collection and I have to say it's still a fantastic console.

With classics like Shenmue 1&2, Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure 1&2 (purely for chao garden), Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star Online and Soul Calibur this console was well and truly under-rated.

Did anyone have one or own one?

From what I hear, the GC version of Skies of Arcadia has: more content, lower random encounter rate, better textures, and faster loading times. The Dreamcast has: allegedly better audio, VMU stuff, is the original, and apparently VGA output is better than component, but I just use a CRT.

I don’t wanna come off as a Debbie Downer, because I love my Dreamcast (favorite game is Grandia 2), but I would hardly call the Dreamcast underrated anymore. I feel it was really only underrated when it was on store shelves, but afterwards, it’s one of the most talked about and beloved consoles.

Anytime you bring it up, you’ll constantly hear about how awesome the games were, and it’s still almost constantly getting new indie titles. I would call an underrated console as something that Actually doesn’t get brought up very often, and/or isn’t talked about in almost universal positive light, as opposed to the most famous cult classic console, with a famous rabid fan base.

Idk, maybe I’m biased because I like a lot of things with cult followings, so stuff like the Dreamcast fandom is borderline nomie tier for me.

better audio is worth it.

Maybe, but in the UK SEGA wasn't very big at all and many people didn't get their hands on one! Like the CUBE it's still underrated in my opinion. I'm glad I have some spare time at the moment though to really get into this console. The reconditioned VMUs are working great too!

The Dreamcast didn’t sell well in the US either. People tend to misuse the term underrated when they really mean overlooked, which is what I’m getting at here. It’s kind of weird seeing famous critically acclaimed cult classics labeled as underrated, despite being rated very highly.

Underrated would be more accurate for a console that isn’t looked at in a positive light, but maybe you, or someone else, really likes the standout games. Something like the Jaguar or 3DO. The Dreamcast library and console are highly rated and very beloved, so it’s rated correctly, but due to its low sales figures, it would be overlooked.

Yeah I understand what you mean there. The only thing that was rated here though was the Phantasy Star Online and had a huge following but people did'nt even want to give Shemue a try :(

I've never played PSO, mostly due to a lack of interest in the gameplay, but I do have a somewhat petty gripe over the PSO fandom. It's probably due to an age gap, but there are times I feel like I'm the only person under the age of 35 that cares about the original tetralogy, much less knows they exist. Then you couple that with the few PSO fans who know they exist, but refuse to acknowledge them. Though that's not exactly uncommon in long running game franchises with huge gaps between entries.

I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying your Dreamcast and collection of DC games.

The Dreamcast looks like a pretty good console when I played it many years ago at my friends house. I only played Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast.

I never owned the dreamcast either but I remember playing Sonic the hedgehog at Best Buy when I was like 11 years old. Some exciting times. Another game I remember from the console is Crazy Taxi which actually is a really fun game. Now that you have a dreamcast you should get that one. I can't say Sonic would be much fun but you'd probably like Crazy Taxi. Just a classic I remember from years ago.

Sonic Adventure 1 can be wonky at times, Adventure 2 plays fine outside of the camera controls.
