With the recent releases of both Final Fantasy I and II for the iPhone (as well as a handful of previous titles), Square Enix has proven itself an ardent supporter of Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. That level of commitment increases with the announcement of Chaos Rings, an all-new adventure for the iPhone. This planned 3D RPG is not a port of an existing game, but it does have some well-known Square names behind its development, such as Yusuke Naora, who designed characters for Final Fantasy VII.
Japanese gaming blog Andriasang translated news about Chaos Rings from the new issue of Famitsu. Chaos Rings is about a tournament that pits five pairs of fighters into battles to the death with a prize of eternal life. You bounce around to each pair of fighters, getting their piece of the narrative until the entire story of Chaos Rings is complete. You do not just stay in the battle arena during the entire game. Each pair must venture out of the central arena and explore new worlds to level up.
Combat in Chaos Rings uses two types of attacks: solo and pair. Apparently, pair attacks do extra damage, but using them makes each fighter vulnerable to enemy damage. Finally, defeating an enemy lets you absorb the fallen's genetic code and later equip it to develop new skills and powers.
