If you are going to try the series. I dare you play Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. That game is as dark and gritty (world torn apart, demons everywhere, defying god tyranny etc. that kind of stuff) as this new one. Main Shin Megami Tensei saga is a dungeon crawler whose main features are moral choices, heavy metal soundtrack, demon recruitment and fusion. In some of them you can follow a True Chaos path and team up with Lucifer in his strife with god. Or go full neutral too.
Essentially speaking, they are rather similar. An angsty edgy kid strolling around the barren lands of a Japanese city overpowering Beezlebub and Buddha in order to join your cause (although some demons will only join you depending of your morality and alingment).
