An interesting subject I heard on a podcast, do you think kids, once they reach a certain age, be allowed to change their name at least once?

Not sure about it, to be honest. Probably going to end up with a lot of edgy 13 year olds changing their name to something funny and then regretting it two years later

I think so! If a kid doesn't like the name they've been given, they should have the right to get it changed to something they like! Then the teachers at school would HAVE to call them by their cool new name!

I feel a lot of the kids will end up changing their name to the same name, famous cartoon names like Batman, Joker, Goku, Vegeta or longer names.

Which is why I'm thinking till they are at least 18 or whatever adult age is.
I’m siding with this. 18 year olds aren’t much smarter than 16 year olds, but you’re at the age where you can get a driver’s license and join the military, you should be able to legally change your name to whatever you want. You just can’t buy beer and cigarettes.

Imagine if you changed your name and left your family and your family wants to know where you are. The 18-year-old would have the choice to be on their own with no help.

Once people become adults, they can make their own minds up. I wouldn't let a Child do it.

Kids tend to change their minds due to peer pressure or what they are feeling for that day. Changing their names along with other things should be reserved when they are an adult. It's a grown-up decision & should be treated as such.

no one will forbid children to call themselves by another name. But I think it’s better to officially change your first name when you reach 16/18 years old.

By the way, don't parents have the right to change a child's name?

I think it should be a normal rite of passage when people turn 18 for them to choose the name they want to be known by for their adult life.

I don't think anything is wrong with kids changing their names. I mean they have to do so once they are old enough to take decisions for themselves.

I see no reason kids should be allowed to change their names. It is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that the kids get a good name and the kids got to trust they made the right choice.

An adult should have the right to change their names. I see no big deal in that as long as they are old enough to take key decisions.

This is why I wouldn't be for this because the child would change it to something that they'll regret at some point down the road. There are some things that children shouldn't get to decide for themselves.

Not as a minor, no. But once the child reaches the age of maturity which is 18 or 21 depending on which state you live in (within the United States), then there are court processes in place to allow individual to legally change his or her name.

At 18 you're legally an adult. I'm pretty sure you could do it then at 18. I don't know why they'd make you wait till 21.

In the United States, some states recognize the age of maturity at 21 vs 18. I don't know if state name is based at the individual state level or government level, but regardless, one should be able to change their legal name once the age requirement has been satisfied.
