A few days ago the nathan hot dog contest was held which joey chestnut won by eating 69 hot dogs.

Each day and every year lots of these contests are held through out the world ranging from all food, but should an act of gluttony be held in this world where many beg for food day in and out? What do you think and thoughts on that?

I saw about the hot dog eating contest that took place on Independance Day and to be honest I have never been a fan of eating contests, I just do not see what the fascination is when it comes down to stuffing your face to eat so many of one particular food in so many minutes to win. It can not do your health any good at all either I would have thought.

I don't believe they should exist either, waste of food and it isn't good for a human body. That joey chestnut alone must eat about several hundred hot dogs a year and I don't see him living past 70 with a very rough 50s and 60s.

Its not my cup of tea, but if it floats someone else's boat then Mazel tov.. some things are just apart of American culture.. this also includes tractor pulls and monster truck rallies..   If it isnt your thing or you dont like it, then don't participate in it.. no need to ban it..

some people don't like interracial relationships or agree with them mixing races by having kids either.. should that be banned as well?

I dont like competitive eating either and for a lot of the reasons you guys have stated, but im not going to say that it should be banned, instead, I'm not going to participate in it.. more power to anyone else who chooses to do so..

And that chestnut dude is crazy.. I thought that he'd have lost by now.. perhaps by the Japanese dude that wants his title back.. congrats to him I guess..

Oh well, at least the hot dogs are made from real beef.

unlike those things you mention eating contests waste food and poisons the human body for a moment of fame.

I dont agree with it either, but that kind of thinking is a slippery slope. The great thing about personal responsibility is that you accept the consequences of your own actions.

Chestnut may be insane for participating, but at least he is accepting the responsibility for his actions, something that many people do not do. I've also read that he is very healthy and keeps himself in shape as well. Again, something that many people do not do, I am pretty certain that he has a detox regimen that he follows to get all of that shit (no pun intended) out of his system once the event is over.

If people are stupid enough to follow along with what someone else does and dont take care of themselves, then those are just the consequences they deserve for being so stupid.

With everything that people do that is more harmful to themselves and others, competitive eating is, and should be the least of our concerns.

People should be able to use the food they bought with their money for whatever they like.

There still would be starving people even if these contests don't exist since many companies don't give away free food.

These competitive eating contest most likely create a lot of jobs since I bet a lot of tourists buy plane tickets, rent cars, and hotel rooms to watch these contests. The hot dog company also makes a lot of hot dogs for these contests, and the watchers will buy the hot dogs at the food store the next time they go to food stores because they are aware of the hot dog brand sponsoring the event.

In a way, there could be less hunger in towns which make hot dogs because workers earn money making hot dogs to buy food with their pay check from the Hot Dog company.

Bingo.

This man has an excellent point and is right on target. Take it from me, someone who lives near a waterfront community that has been heavily affected by Hurricane Sandy. My area got hit with flooding, although it wasn't as bad as areas directly south and west of me, which is exactly where Coney Island is. Hurricane Sandy eviscerated Coney Island. Nathan's which is usually open all year, but 24/7 once the amusement parks are open for Summer, was closed until Memorial Day. Actually no, I think they ended up opening a week after that.

The only Nathans that was open, was the small location on the boardwalk, and that opened on Easter Sunday and closed at 8 p.m. each day, while the flagship store remained closed. My husband and I worried that Nathan's and even Coney Island itself, wouldnt be able to open for the Summer. Nathan's also employs a lot of teens as well and giving them Summer jobs will help keep them out of trouble.

The contest does provide additional jobs and much needed tourism to the area as well. And this has been a good thing because this area really needed some revitalization after both the hurricane and subsequent looting and also the fact that most of the park has been in a stalemate between the City and the dumb ass billionaire who held the entire area hostage because, despite NYC and NYS gambling and zoning laws, he was determined to close the park and put up casinos and an indoor water park instead.

Who the hell would put up an indoor water park, when the ocean is right there?!

The competition is good business for the area, the Nathan's brand, neighboring business and even the people itself. It is definitely a good sign for recovery since, many businesses have not yet reopened, or remained closed as their insurance did not cover the damages adequately, or at all.

Well, there are like food promotions....and as long as the people doesn't get sick by trying to eat too much stuff...it's good I suppose.
I wouldn't say there should be eating contests...but they wouldn't be bad....I suppose.
