If you have 9 MB* on your PlayStation Vita memory card, you've got enough room for the free Skype app that arrives on the handheld today in North America (April 25th in the EU). Skype on the PlayStation Vita will pack both voice and video calling options, run on 3G as well as WiFi, and use both of the PlayStation Vita's cameras. Also interesting, if you leave the Skype app running in the background of your Vita, notifications of incoming calls and chats will pop up while you use other Vita programs.
Sadly, you cannot take a call, go back to your game of choice and continue chatting. That's a feature of the Vita's built-in Party App, but PlayStation's Senior Director of Mobile Platforms John Koller doesn't see one being better than the other.
"Party is fantastic and allows the cross-game chat functionality, but the video portion of this announcement is really important" he said. "Being able to have our version of what's very popular on other mobile devices is really critical."
