They've apparently spent a lot of money on TV advertising, but have so many different campaigns running at any one time that you won't see too many ads for any one product.
So they've got the equivalent of about 8.4 days of advertising running, but split across 16 campaigns (aka, they're advertising 16 different games this year). Meanwhile the likes of Activision have less ads running total, but it's all dedicated to Call of Duty hence the game ends up really well known/advertisements for it seen all the time.

Maybe it would have been better if Nintendo only advertised one or two games a month, and hence made everyone more aware of games like Skyward Sword? That would have probably translated into far more sales to be honest...
