There's a poll as well, for anyone who wants to vote. But first, let's look at some possible reasons to be both happy and wary about this news:

Put simply, will it be a good thing for Nintendo? Because personally I'm not sure. On the one hand, this could be great news for the series that Miyamoto doesn't particuarly like or want to keep making (2D Mario games), since his 'replacements' might decide to put more effort into them again or have Wario and Waluigi as the third and fourth playable characters in a third New Super Mario Bros game.

And Donkey Kong Country Returns 2 could get Kremlings again, if Miyamoto stays away from the game's development and doesn't go asking whether they 'need' to return.

However...

He was the one person keeping the story in check in the Mario series. And by in check, I meant he kept the games somewhat story free, to avoid another Super Mario Sunshine. I don't think I'd be happy to see another game so focused on Rosalina or other minor characters or bogged down by symbolism or such stuff. That's what I dread will end up in the next 3D Mario game with no Miyamoto to lay down the law.

You might as well hand Zelda to Aonuma on a silver platter, because if Miyamoto doesn't play a role, it's unlikely anyone else will tell him when his ideas don't work very well. Remember it was Miyamoto who upturned the tea table and told everyone that Skyward Sword wasn't turning out to be very good and needed to be changed up a fair bit with motionplus, etc. Do we really want to see what will happen if that kind of criticism gets ignored? Skyward Sword may be a good game, but I fear we could easily get something so over the top it actually hurts the Zelda series.

So, which side are you on? Will Miyamoto working on smaller projects instead of major ones be a good or bad thing?

Hes not retiring!

Well, since he's not retiring, I'm not quite sure what to think. http://nintendo3dsblog.com/miyamoto-is-not-retiring-from-his-current-role

....What they said, it was a minconclusion.

miyamoto hasen't really been deeply involved with a zelda game since ALTTP anyway.
