For the last ten years, Andy Baio has been performing an experiment on his son. It is equal parts cruel and fascinating. Rather than let him play whatever video game he wanted, Baio made his boy work his way to modernity by playing through the history of video games chronologically. Starting with 1979's Galaxian.

When or if I have a kid, they too will play the old games before moving onto the newer ones.

This sound like a good way to teach his son about the history of games. I bet he would be better at newer games after playing classic games some of those classic games like Megaman, Super Mario 2, Tetris, Quake, Doom, etc can be pretty hard even on the easy difficulty settings.

If his son has a smartphone, tablet, or PC, he may have secretly play newer games when his dad is not home.

This sounds like a good idea lol.

I'll do this as well, as someone who is also into old games I would love for my son to share in my love of it and be better at modern games because of it.

Because lets face it, some games these days completely hold your hand.

I'm sorry, but this is absolutely dumb and a violation of the freedom rights. I understand restricting your children from doing certain fun activities as a means of punishment (grounding), but forcing your children to do what you want all the time without any disciplinary intention in mind, just to do an experiment, is an example of horrible parenting.
