When you have a smartphone, you’d like to trust that the apps coming straight form the manufacturer of that phone are secure. More to the point, you’d probably safely assume any software designed to access your information stored in your phone would be something that couldn’t be compromised in any way. A new report suggests Sony’s own backup and restore app has been hacked, but that’s not even the most sensational news. Hackers have taken over the app entirely, even claiming ownership in Google Play.

It’s not yet clear how the app may have been compromised, but a search for Sony’s Backup and Restore app in Google Play show the app as you might expect it to be found, but also shows the Developer as “Nirav Patel Kanudo”. The app is now managed by the “HeArt HaCkEr Group.”

If you use a Sony smartphone, or tablet, and you updated and use the Backup and Restore App, it is best to change your Google Account passwords, and other account passwords which you use on your Sony smartphone, and tablet.

Also, it would be a good idea to change to a more secure operating system like Cyanogenmod, and not install the Sony Backup and Restore app on your device.

It is scary to know that a hacker is secretly hacking and stealing file backups of Sony users' photos, videos, files, and documents on Sony Smartphones and tablets, or worse secretly installing viruses, and spying on the user's text messages, voice calls, web browsing history, microphone, and watching them through their front and rear camera.

jeeze, they need to fire their secuirty team if that app got hacked.

Sony's Response on its forum

“Sony Mobile takes the security and privacy of customer data very seriously. We are currently investigating these reports. More information will follow as soon as we have fully assessed the situation.“

The hack looks real.

Sony should stop selling all their smartphones, and tablets which carry personal information until they make sure their smartphones and tablets are safe to use again for new users, and there are not anymore hacked Sony apps, or security problems on their apps on Google Play store, or on their phones to protect their current users from hackers, and viruses.

I read on blog articles like Sony loses money from smartphone unit, games and movie divisions turn a profit that Sony's smartphone business is not very profitable like Samsung, and Apple, so not selling smartphones won't be a loss for Sony, and they can end up having more money for making games, and movies which are more profitable.
