Sony on Thursday reported a year-on-year decrease in quarterly PS3 unit sales, but execs say the company is still on the right trajectory to hit previously-announced goals.

"In terms of units, it is true that PS3, as compared to last year, is slightly worse, but on a full-year basis we believe we are on track to sell the 10 million units that I said at the beginning of the year," said Sony EVP and CFO Nobuyuki Oneda in an earnings call.

Sony announced earlier today that PS3 sold 4.46 million units during the company's fiscal Q3, a 9 percent drop from 4.9 million for the same quarter a year ago.

Oneda added, "...Relatively speaking, [compared to] the growth of other platforms, we are behind, but it's not the case that we are not meeting the target."

Sales in the games division dropped by nearly one-third to 581.2 billion yen ($6.5 billion) during the quarter. Operating income dove 97 percent to 4 million yen. Sony said the segment was able to stay profitable "due to the steady reductions in the cost of PS3 hardware."

During the quarter, PSP hardware sales slipped 12 percent to 5.08 million units. Oneda announced that Sony would be reverting back to its fiscal year goal of 15 million PSPs sold after raising that target by 1 million units just a few months ago.

"We thought 16 million would be rather difficult" to achieve after seeing holiday sales, he said.

PS2 hardware sales during the quarter dropped 53 percent to 2.52 million sold.

Year-on-year Q3 unit sales for PS3 software grew by 57 percent to 40.8 million, while PS2 software dropped 51 percent to 29.7 million. PSP software dropped 15 percent to 15.5 million.

Plus, most parents don't really care about blu-ray since many people still don't have HDTV, so they can't take advantage of Blu-ray 1080P resolution.

I agree once another price cut happens the PS3 will be selling more.

That's really the only problem with the PS3, price. The price drop would make a BIG difference, even if it is a $50 dollar one.

They should bring back the 20GB PS3 version or make a version with less features, but a cheaper price since some people just care about gaming and not storing all their music and videos on it.
