PlayStation Sony Confirms PlayStation Disc Production Will End In 2028

Sony has officially confirmed that it will end the production of physical discs for PlayStation consoles, starting January 2028. In a new blog update, the company says that it made the decision based on how physical game disc sales have begun to decline, and in the future, all new games–both first- and third-party–will be available through the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.

Sony added that this new transition “has no impact” on games that have already been released or will be released. “This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” the company added, while emphasizing that it will “continue to prioritize” resources on where consumers can access its games.

The writing has been on the wall for years now, as recent reports from Sony have indicated a massive shift from physical to digital. PlayStation owners overwhelmingly purchase games digitally when compared to physical editions, and one of the biggest games of the year, GTA 6, will also be available purely as a digital product. While a “physical” edition will be sold at retailers, this is essentially a code-in-a-box copy. It’s also worth noting that both Sony and Microsoft released versions of their flagship consoles in 2020 that did not include a disc drive, and Sony’s PS5 Pro doesn’t ship with one by default (but it can still be added via a modular attachment).

The other knock-on effect is that the next PlayStation console will not include a physical media drive for its base model, as Sony aims to keep costs down. “This pretty much guarantees that PS6 won’t arrive until 2028 at the earliest,” Ampere Analysis senior games research analyst Piers Harding-Rolls said to Game File. Even physical copies of games don’t contain the full experience on the disc, with many acting as an authentication key while all game data is copied to the console–a process that usually requires a hefty download as well.

On top of all this, Sony has also announced that it will be closing the PlayStation Store on PS3, as well as on PS Vita.

This is unfortunate news for Plsystation gamers who plan to buy physical games in 2028.

I feel more people will play games on Nintendo Switch consoles, and other newer and older consoles which supports physical games.
 
And just like that this is the last generation of games that I will own a Playstation console. It's been good, the PS1 was my second console but I am not supporting them after this gen.
 
Tbh, the disc has been mostly useless and shelf candy for people on social media to larp as preservationists for internet points since the PS4.

The game doesn’t run off the disc after installation, gets day one patches, and takes up the same amount of storage space as the digital version.

PC games used to have no CD cracks because after installation, the disc became useless and you only had to put it in as an anti-piracy measure. That’s all these discs are for.
 
The first disc-based Final Fantasy was VII on psx and the last FF to release on discs will be Final Fantasy VII Revelation on ps5. And Thus Tifa's legendary PLOT opened it and then her legendary PLOT will close disc era FF in 2027 lol.

I don't think Xbox is doing this. Or at least there's no concrete evidence. They're thinking about rolling out a feature where you can digitize your discs so if they break or if you lose the disc you don't have to rebuy a digital version. Either way if Project Helix turns out to be discless too I won't be getting it either and will just game on Nintendo since they're keeping physical alive on the Switch 2. (Though there are tons of third party games that aren't fully physical.) Digital only is the dumbest thing to happen to media IMO.

I love the fact they'll still insist that games should be priced at 70-100 for costs when there is no need for physical discs.

It has also become a meme that even Dominos is joining in on.

It goes into the they have realized they can't keep earning money off people and so have decided the easiest thing to do is to force everyone into a subscription service like they did with some of the games already where you have to have access to internet to connect to their servers to verify your game.

It was already leaked that the new Xbox is probably going disc-less


This was rumored years ago with the all digital future. In 10 years there will be no more physical media, it'll all be digital.

Good thing there's tons of retro games for me to play then and I could probably save some money too by not buying the next gen consoles and just upgrading my pc. It sucks to see gaming end up this way, but I guess it was eventually bound to happen since society is lazy these days and want instant entertainment which is why forums aren't as popular as social media too and why films and shows end up on streaming services. At least Nintendo is still holding on with their first party games for now. I'm going to keep buying physical media until I no longer can.
 
At the very least with Nintendo's game-key cards, you still get the full license of the game on a physical card rather than being tied to a Nintendo Account, meaning it can still be resold. This is unlike Sony's in-box game codes, which must be redeemed using a PSN account. Nintendo is ahead of the curve.

Seems pretty hypocritical to talk about not supporting next gen consoles because they’re getting rid of physical games and investing in your PC, a platform that’s known for not having physical games for like 2 decades. You wonder why I accuse people of being performative when they make statements like this. Like, what stance are you actually making here?

Also as an FYI, even a good bit of Nintendo’s first party games aren’t fully on the cartridge. If it’s a Switch 2 edition of a Switch 1 game, the cart does technically have the full game on it, but just the Switch 1 version. The Switch 2 version is still downloaded off the internet like it’s a game key card. They also charge you an extra $10 for the Switch 2 version, which is the cost of the Switch 2 upgrade if you bought it separately. So essentially it’s like saying “includes all DLC” but they add all the DLC to the price tag.

I wouldnt call going digital being lazy, it's probably far more expensive to go physical these days. Everyone claims theyre going to buy physical until they cant...you do understand that you can still buy a physical disc and that disc still not work because the console/game itself needs to be online, right?

Tbh, a lot of people that swear by physical in one format are totally okay with digital or worse, streaming, with a different format they don’t care about. It’s like, lol, okay bro. Really sticking to your guns aren’t ya buddy?

People need to stop acting like they’re being an activist over shit like this. They only say this to try and get internet ass-pats when they really don’t care nearly as much as they’re putting on. Apparently it’s too embarrassing to just say “I wanted this”. You have to come up with some philosophical cope to show off to people.

I’m not against people wanting physical medial. Hell, I probably own more shit than most users on here. You wanna know why I own all this physical media? Because I wanted it. There you go, no pseudo-philosophical cope, no activist stance, I just wanted it.

Oh wait, I’m being dishonest, there’s another reason why I own some media: the box/cover art looked cool. Really sticking my neck out for that one. Please give me likes for this post!
