Sony's Tokyo Game Show press conference Thursday afternoon didn't have the huge revelations of Microsoft's earlier keynote address, but it did offer PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 owners solid dates for some highly anticipated features.
Sony Japan's Home Senior Producer Ryoji Akagawa offered the latest look at the Home service. A "large scale" closed beta for the service will be held at the end of October or beginning of November. This will be followed with an open beta test before the end of 2008.
On the PSP side of things, two highly anticipated services will hit the system this month. The nifty little bit of connectivity that lets you play Ad-hoc PSP games over the internet by using your PS3 as a proxy is now officially known as Ad-hoc Party for PlayStation Portable. It will kick off on October 30. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G will be compatible out the gate, with other titles to follow.
But before that, direct PlayStation Store access will kick off from October 15. Coincidentally, Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaikida or 2, the first major PSP title to be released simultaneously as a download and package version will hit the next day. It will be joined by Bleach Soul Carnival the next week.
Sony revealed at the press conference that its entire upcoming first party lineup will be released in this download/package pairing. That includes LocoRoco2 and Resistance.
This press conference was also the announcement point for some of those new hardware bundles that leaked out earlier in the week. To recap, Japan will be getting an 80 gigabyte PS3 unit bundled with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue for the same 39,800 yen price point of the current 40 gig model. A LittleBigPlanet bundle is also on the way.
All dates and prices listed in this story apply exclusively to the Japanese market. However, given how things have worked out so far, many will likely end up applying to international markets as well once Sony's global offices get their own press releases out.
