Previous reports by Reuters noted that Sony Corp would be posting a 100 billion yen annual operating loss -- its first loss in 14 years. Unfortunately for the electronics giant, Reuters reported today that estimates are now placing the loss at 260 billion yen, or $2.9 billion for the year to March. Apparently, Sony Corp will be bolstering its restructuring plans in order to cut costs, including curbing investment, closing several plants and cutting 16,000 regular and contract jobs.

According to Reuters, Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer commented on the recent news in a Thursday conference: "While these are extremely challenging times, we must be fully prepared to embrace the opportunities that await us once these dark economic clouds begin to part," Stringer said.

things are not looking good for sony.

the economy, and a $600 pricetage for their newly released system. Sony just did everything wrong with the PS3's launch, and it's taken awhile to get more gamers interested and look past the 360.

They OWNED the gaming world with the PS2 ... then got too full o fthemselves, and overly confident the PS# would sell itself with JUST the sony name on it ... and blew it

i just bought a PS3, and reallly wish i hadn't now.

I know for sure that right now that most PS3's will be collecting dust. but in the future they will be a big hit and used daily.

I guest sony kind of screwed up with Blu-Ray and Cell proccessing unlike microsoft and nintendo who stuck to putting their games on DVD and using parts that are cheaper to produce.
