Years ago, women weren't allowed to work. Eventually, they were given jobs in careers like teaching and nursing - jobs that allowed them to use their nurturing abilities. Jobs that used their other abilities were not widely available to them until the last hundred years. There have been revolutions and rallies and big changes around topics like freedom, race, and even sexual orientation, but the largest part of the worlds' population still lacks many basic rights in many countries and even in Western countries like the United States, it is often deemed okay to make sexist remarks- as long as you don't do it in the workplace. Most people wouldn't make a racist joke in the presence of that race, so why it is that sexism is still often deemed "okay" to practice? It's a question I can't answer.

In regards to the world of gaming, sexism is rampant among both of the sexes. Even in such an advanced world where many prejudices have been overcome, one of the stereotypes that remain the strongest is that “girls don't play games”. Even though "girl gaming" has grown rampantly over the past 10 years, it's a fact that females are largely absent from the gaming industry workforce. There are plenty of suspicions why, but not many facts.

This is an issue that Sony Online Entertainment aims to help to help fix. First introduced in 2008, the Gamers In Real Life (G.I.R.L.) scholarship offers female game development students a chance at a $10,000 scholarship. It is also open to males, but primarily aimed at getting more females in the gaming industry.

“I think that it’s perspective and when you have more women working on a development team, they bring a unique female perspective about how they play the game, how they engage with them and what art is appealing to them,” said Laura Naviaux, SOE’S Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing. “What I think is unique about Sony Online Entertainment is that we also have such a broad player base, we have a lot of females that play our games so in turn, we need females on our development teams to be able to deliver content that they’re going to appreciate and want to play.”

The scholarship is a competition that challenges game design students to show their best work based off on a particular chosen game. This year SOE wants students to submit two pieces of original concept art inspired by either Free Realms or EverQuest II, along with an essay about how they can change and improve the image of women in games. The contest is open this year until April 6, 2011.

Whatever you think about females in gaming, with big names like Sony backing them, I'd say the future of women in the gaming industry looks good.

is there many female game makers out there?

I think that the main reason girls aren't big in gaming is many games are focused around guys. Many, many games wouldn't be fun to girls. If they add more games for girls, more girls would play.
