So it's official Sony will not be attending E3 2020, but will be attending “hundreds of consumer events across the globe” to showcase upcoming PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 title. Read from gematsu and gamesindustry biz:

“After thorough evaluation Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided not to participate in E3 2020,” a Sony Interactive Entertainment representative said. “We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.”

The representative continued, “We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”

E3 is where you would want to reveal it, the place the fans would be at.

Indeed especially for a new console reveal. Probably part of the reason is because of last year E3's attendance drop.

This is unfortunate for people who bought tickets for E3, or go to E3 as a gaming blogger/journalist. I think Xbox vs Playstation conference and booths is one of the main reason to attend E3.

that's because the only real game company at E3 was Microsoft.

True enough. If sony attended too last year probably the attendance level would not drop.

thankfully tickets haven't gone on sale yet.

That is good that tickets are not on sale yet.

I still see a few people who will attend E3, and get upset because they thought Sony will attend unless the ticket seller warns them Sony will not attend. Hopefully, there would be other cool activities like VR to keep guests entertained.
