It's no longer enough just to port a classic to a new system and call it a day. Pac-Man Championship Edition proved that reworking a classic and bringing it up to date can equal massive success. Taito recently did the same with Space Invaders, releasing a new entry into the franchise on DS and PSP that met with critical success. Now, Taito is bringing Space Invaders Extreme to the Xbox Live Arcade.
Space Invaders Extreme is due out on XBLA in 2009 and supports up to four players either locally or online. It features revamped graphics with visualizers exclusive to 360 created by Jeff Minter of Llamasoft fame. New twists have been added to the gameplay formula, mini-games that pop up in the midst of a full game are brought into the mix, and a co-op mode has been created. That's on top of the multiplayer Survivor and Score Attack modes.
