It has long been said that Hollywood is creatively and intellectually bankrupt, but that trend is over, people. The big-entertainment geniuses have finally hit upon the ultimate video game movie franchise. I'm talking about Space Invaders people. There is a Space Invaders movie in the pipeline.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Odd Lot Entertainment’s Gigi Pritzker are behind the project, and are looking for a writer to write a movie. My pitch: There are invaders. That come from space. (please make check payable to "CASH".)
Seriously though, this might be the best source material for a video game movie ever, because it is, essentially, a name and a vague, vague idea about an alien invasion. Since most of the Space Invaders fanbase is dead, there's little worry of angering them by not staying true to the game. All you have to capture is the relentlessly faster and faster action of the original game, in film form.
Space Invaders is the latest of a string of projects based on retro properties from Lorenzo di Bonaventura. He is a producer on the Transformers and G.I. Joe movies and he is developing Asteroids, and a remake of 1989's Pet Sematary.
