Speaking Main Characters VS Non-Speaking Main Characters

There has always been two types of Main game characters in the history of game.
Speaking characters, or Non-speaking characters.(Includes when they say gibberish like in M and L RPG Games
At first there were non-speaking characters like the line thing from hockey, to Pac-Man, to the early stages of Mario. Then the talkers came and changed everything forever. Now it's a struggle between speaking characters and non-speaking characters. But which do you prefer and why?
I've always liked Non-speaking characters like Mario, but I've taking a liking to funny Main characters as well. But in the end I like Non-speaking characters.

Then talking. The only hero I know who doesn't is Link, and I'm not much of a fan of him.

Depends on how MUCH talking. If a character won't shut up when asked, I'm not sympathetic to them. Like in real life?
