The Japanese and North American Square Enix Members sites have been hacked. According to Square Enix, unknown parties accessed a server containing user information in both territories. The Members service is currently down while the situation is under investigation.

"We have reason to believe that unknown parties may have gained unauthorized access to a particular Square Enix server related to the free Square Enix Members service offered in North America and Japan. In response, Square Enix, Inc. has temporarily suspended operation of the Square Enix Members service," the company said in a statement.

The Square Enix Members service allows players to register codes inside of Square Enix games in order to earn rewards. Square Enix assured users that no credit card data is at risk, as the hacked server didn't store any card information.

"We are assessing the full extent of this potential breach to determine what data, if any, was compromised and will provide more details as soon as possible. While some personal information may have been accessed, we can confirm that there is no possibility of any credit card information leak from this incident, since the server in question stores no credit card information. We estimate that the suspension will continue for a few days until we complete our investigation and counter-measures. We will update you as we learn more.

"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of the SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS service. We take data security extremely seriously and we regret any inconvenience this may have caused our customers and fans. We appreciate your patience and support at this time."

update:

Square Enix stated yesterday that somebody "may have gained unauthorized access to a particular Square Enix server" and took its members service offline in both Japan and the U.S. Today, the company clarified that 1.8 million customer's accounts had been affected.

The breach hit one million Japanese members and 800,000 U.S. ones. The hack impacted customer names and phone numbers. The server in question stores no credit card info, so, according to Square Enix, "there is no possibility of any credit card information leak."

"We are yet to learn whether illegal access was gained to our clients' information," said a Square Enix spokesperson. "But we have asked our customers to be aware of the incident in case they receive suspicious messages using our name."
