The Embracer Group, a planet-swallowing mass of video game publishers that already includes the likes of Gearbox and THQ Nordic, tonight announced a deal to purchase a number of storied studios and properties from Square Enix.

While the purchase isn’t final—this is just “an agreement to acquire” them until everything is signed off later in the year—the announcement press release says that if approved it will be a USD$300 million deal. For the $300 million, Embracer will get hold of:

  • The studios Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal (the latter of which will presumably be in for a name change), numbering around 1,100 employees worldwide.
  • The “catalogue of IPs” owned and/or worked on by those studios, including Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Thief, Legacy of Kain and “the continued sales and operations of the studios’ more than 50 back-catalogue games.” Also of interest: “Crystal Dynamics is actively working on several AAA projects, including the next mainline Tomb Raider game that will deliver next-generation storytelling and gameplay experiences.”

Square Enix bought Eidos (and Crystal Dynamics along with it) in 2009 for about US$100 million.

Hope they are happy with their purchase and it works out for them when they bring new products to the market.

Well Crystal's last game the Marvel's Avengers failed to sell, and last Tomb Raider and Deux Ex Mankind Divided were also not that great. And and Eidos Montreal's Guardians Of The Galaxy game sales also underperformed. I guess that's why SE is selling them.

Read this from Tweaktown:

Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal - Low Profits, "Disappointing Sales"

Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal barely make any profit
Both studios spend tens of millions on expenses, R&D, and development costs
Big AAA games from both studios have missed Square Enix's expectations
Avengers was a commercial failure and cost Square Enix $63 million
Analysts estimate production of games from these studios resulted in a $200 million loss for Square Enix

Cost reduction was the biggest motivator for the sale. Square Enix's Western studios are extremely expensive to maintain and the production cycles require lots of investment.

The studios spent a lot of money on game development, which is rightly so, considering Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal released three Tomb Raider games within a five-year period. That kind of delivery does not happen often in the games industry.

These studios have some pretty heavy books. Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal have very small profit margins. Revenues are high, but operating income is very low. This indicates both studios are spending lots of money on production.

In the last 3 years, both studios have generated a combined $489 million in revenues, but expenses were roughly $474 million.

I hope the new owner can make profitable Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Thief, Legacy of Kain, and other games.

The Avengers game was a really wasted opportunity. I would love to play a good avengers rpg game with a good story with branching path and dialogue choices alas they focused the story on an unknown superhero with boring powers, Khamala Khan. The story should focus on the A lister main avengers with each chapter dedicated to each Main avenger member.

Hulk's chapter would be the most fun!
