BioWare's big budget MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, which reportedly cost almost $200 million to make, appears to be doing well so far. Publisher Electronic Arts reports that since launch in December 2011, over 1.7 million players have subscribed. In addition, over two million copies of The Old Republic have been sold.

That's over twice the number of copies sold of World of Warcraft close to its launch in 2004, though there's been a lot of growth in the MMO space since those days. World of Warcraft's Cataclysm expansion sold 3.3 million copies within 24 hours, though of course benefitted from an enormous active subscriber base.

EA's CEO John Riccitiello said, "Star Wars: The Old Republic is developing a committed community of players with more than 1.7 million active subscribers and growing."

How long those subscribers decide to stick around is another matter, but it's still an impressive start considering The Old Republic is only a little over one month old. EA charges $15 per month to play, a charge that kicks in after the 30-day free trial. There is a slight discount if you decide to sign up for three-month and six-month subscription options. You also have to pay for the base game, which starts at $60 for the standard edition. As of yet, there are no alternative payment options.
