I know a lot of you guys on here play Terraria too, and I was wondering if anyone else is enjoying the Starbound beta? The game is very, very similar to Terraria in look and feel, and some of the same designers from Terraria are working on this new one, although the games are not affiliated in any way. I like it a lot better then Terraria actually, and it's still only in early beta!

Different races to pick from, way more options in building a home decoratively, larger sprites with more animations, super interesting worlds (A whole universe to explore really) and tons of NPC's both hostile and friendly.

Anyway, it's available through Steam if anyone is interested, only $15 I believe, and you can get a slight discount if you split a 4-pack with friends!

I want this game so bad T__T

It's definitely worth it when you get the chance to pick it up! I'm loving it! Although they did do a character wipe the other day.... -_-;; Darn beta!

Is Starbound like an Earthbound hack or is it like a remake of Earthbound or what?

LOL it's nothing to do with earthbound at all.

Oh... my bad. I just went there and I don't understand.

Oh and you have to buy it... never mind I don't have any money. It looks like a free to download and play game.

Just look up starbound on youtube, its a really cool looking game.

Like Terraria, but in space. and high-tech.

Posted a post about this earleir this year, foudn the game over a year ago and preordered in may.. Loving it atm, but hoping for more stable versions in later stages of the beta..

I don't know what Terraria is, but I looked at it and it looks like a... 2D Minecraft... What's this for? Xbox 360? Wii U? PS3?

Better yet. PC!

well, so long as you have a semi decent PC.

Oh I don't like playing games on PC. They don't run well at all and they lag really bad. Even on a good computer like mine.

Is your computer built for gaming? If the games are lagging, they are either poorly programmed, or your computer cannot handle them. My husband and I have gaming computers and they don't lag at all, even on brand new, top of the line games. But gaming is what they're designed to do. You might have a good computer, but if you don't have a good gaming computer, you'd likely still have issues. Starbound isn't too graphically intensive, but I can't speak for how well the programming is, so I don't know how well it'd run on a lesser machine. :/

But yeah, Terraria and Starbound are both similar to Minecraft, but 2D, and more goal oriented. They both have different levels of gear and weapons, bosses to summon, NPC's to interact with and dungeons to explore, rather then Minecraft which is far more creativity oriented, and doesn't have NPC's at all.

Tell us the specs of your PC and which games are lagging.

I believe Minecraft does, I think you can trade gems or something with them for stuff based on which NPC type your trading with….I think. Idunno. Never played PC version.

And I do plan on getting Starbound….when it goes on sale. Or when there's another game I want on sale. Or both, Christmas sale could be coming soon.

Minecraft does... sort of. In Minecraft you can trade some sort of green gemstone (Emeralds?) for items from NPC's, but not only are the NPC villages difficult and massively time consuming to find, but on top of that the ore is even more so. In all the hours I've poured into various worlds I've made, I've yet to find a single emerald, and in general, the NPC's don't have much worth buying that you wouldn't already have come across while searching out the emeralds anyway! At least I've always had terrible luck finding villages and whatnot. I spent nearly 35-45 hours in my last world playing, searching everywhere for a saddle after the last patch. Finally gave up on it and downloaded an item giver mod as soon as it was available. Searching that long in the vain hope of finding an item is just to much, in my opinion.

Anyway, Starbound has NPC's everywhere, of all the different races. Some will sell armor and weapons, as well as schematics to make them, and others will sell vegetables and seeds to grow them. There's a much wider variety of growables so far then either Minecraft or Terraria has.

Uh, schematics? So you can't entirely make stuff without these or what?

And as for plant life and such, Can you…what's the word… oh, gene-splice plants together? Like say Plant A could can grow super fast while plant B had a good resource drop, could you splice the fast gene from A and combine it with B's large drop? I remember reading on the forums last year or so that they were planning on it.

Sorry for the questions, it's just that I have absolutely no expectation of what it's going to be like except "Terraria, but better!"

So far, no there isn't any gene splicing. But for the amount of plants available, I imagine they'll be doing more with the hunger mechanic, as well as perhaps buff foods.

And you can make several sets of gear for your specific race, and so far as I've seen, when you encounter vendors from other races, some can sell you the patterns to make their gear as well. But no, there's lots of crafting things available, and you don't have to rely on patterns you find in world to get started. Although you do come across them in chests throughout the game's planets, and other things. There's also special 'Tech' patterns that are available to find, and you can equip up to 4 of them at once- these give you special abilities, like a double jump, the ability to glide, a power boost to the left or right... And you can also find schematics to cook new foods and craft new decorative items as well, like furniture.

Keep in mind, it's still in early beta, so they're still working on getting everything added and working. At this point, it's fully playable, if incomplete.

Damn. Was looking forward to splicing. Then again, as you said, It's still in Beta.

I think that answered my question. and a lot more, which helps. I think I'll grab some cash for steam and snag it today. And if anyone wants to play with me when I do, by all means lemme know.
