Look out Xbox one and be fearful PS4.

$500 is a good price for a Steam Machine. Hopefully, it is easy to install a secondary OS like Windows, or Linux for playing games not available on Steam like Minecraft which is not on Steam, and needs Java to run.

I bet there would be cheaper Steam Machines from smaller Steam Machine brands  or from people who build their own Steam Machine, and install Steam OS by themselves. The system requirements for Steam OS are not very high, and can be installed on many computers with older CPUs, 4GB of RAM,500GB hard drive, and older video cards like the Nvidia GTX 650, so it would be possible to build your own Steam OS console for $400 if you budget your money wisely, and buy computer parts when they are on sale, or from eBay which sells new and used PC parts for a lot less than retail stores.

if the guys in the video know what they are talking about, it can play minecraft.

I don't think it's right to go cheaper with the steam machine since it's made for gaming so the recommend software could easily be outdated within a year. So it's best to go full price with something like this.

I agree, going full price would be best for gaming out of the box for many years, but Steam Machines should be easily upgradeable because it uses regular PC parts, so upgrading to 8-16GB of RAM, and a faster video card, or CPU should be not too hard, and the prices for parts would cost less because computer parts cost a lot less over time because of increase competition from other parts brands like AMD, Nvidia, Intel, etc which lower prices to get more buyers.

It is also usually cheaper to buy more RAM, and a faster video card yourself, and install it yourself compared to buying a fully loaded PC/Steam Machine from a company like Alienware.

If you mainly play less intensive games, buying a cheaper Steam Machine should be good enough. Games like Counter Strike, Team Fortress, Half-Life, Dota 2, Runescape and League of Legends don't need super fast parts, so a cheaper Steam Machine should be good enough.

constant upgrades though still cost money and you could end up spending more if you just went with a console system instead.

Online stores like eBay, Amazon, and Newegg generally save buyers money on upgrades compared to buying a full-fledge computer or Steam Machine from a company like Alienware PC with a Quad Core CPU, 16GB of RAM, 3TB hard drive, Nvidia GTX 780 3GB, and other parts which you may not need to play your favorite games which you normally play like Minecraft, League of Legends, Dota 2, Team Fortress, etc which have lower system requirements.

Computer makers which sell pre-built PCs usually cost hundreds more for the same computer/steam machine which you can build or upgrade for hundreds less than what they are selling it for in a store.

Plus, not all new PC games except for Crysis 3, and Battlefield 4 games require constant upgrades thesedays since the PC game maker like Minecraft or World of Warcraft want to make their game playable even on regular speed computers, and older PC video cards like the Nvidia GTX 650 which you can buy for $100 on eBay can still play many games on High videos quality settings.
