Steam Machine Thoughts

So my thoughts are that the Steam Box is a good way to get into PC gaming if you are coming from consoles. I love Steam as a service the sales are amazing, the community is amazing, and there is great mod support. Also if you are intimidated by building a custom PC this is a perfect place to start because the specs are really good for the price plus customization for the system. The only cons for it are the OS and the controller. I really like Linux and how much customization it has but it is still terrible for gaming because of the lack of games, and the controller actually looks comfortable but it still looks weird and casual I think casual consumers will look like it is alien tech and will just get an xbox.

Hmm, I've actually been thinking on getting a laptop from Razed to start with PC gaming, I am however looking for options into saving a bit of cash and still receive close to the same quality or less. :O Not so intimidated to build a PC, just where to start is my question and the time too, I will continue debating myself in which to get! :D

I would suggest to not use Razer due to how expensive they are and I also suggest not getting a laptop for PC gaming. I currently have a laptop that I'm using for PC gaming but I wish I had a desktop. At the time I bought it, I needed a laptop for school so it was a decent purchase, but it just can't fulfill all the needs of PC gaming that a desktop can. I can't upgrade it so the parts become quickly outdated so getting it to run new games can be a hassle.

Building your own gaming PC can be super intimidating, but it can be done as long as you have a working knowledge of what the parts are inside a PC. There are also plenty of do it yourself guides on the web. There's also some great sites where you can pick out your PC part by part and have somebody else put it together for you. You'll get a whole lot more bang for your buck if you go the desktop route.

Well any suggestions then?

I know Razer computers are expensive. But I can buy it if I commit to it and not buy expensive and unnecessary things. So money isn't what I'm worried anymore.

And i'd like to take things on the go. I can use it whenever I want and wherever. That's why I have consoles at home for me. I just can't stand sitting in a chair still for hours compared to relaxing on a couch with just a controller at home.

The reason I want it because it's so thin and portable compared to having a desk specifically for it, I just don't have any room.

I second this, do not get a laptop for gaming! They quickly become obsolete and are practically impossible to upgrade in the future, which makes them a terrible option for gaming. They'll work if you need to be on the go, but they're just not very comfy. They get hot fast, which can burn up components, and when your graphics card or whatever needs an upgrade, your stuck with buying an entire new machine rather then the single piece you need. A desktop would last you much, much longer for the same cost or less. I played WoW on a laptop for 2-3 years, and by the time I finally managed to upgrade to a nice new gaming desktop, I was having to run the graphics at the lowest setting possible just to be able to play...

If you need it on the go, then a laptop would work, but they're not the best investment in the long run! You'd be much happier with a solid gaming desktop instead. If you do decide to look into building a desktop, try Newegg.com. They've often got fantastic sales on stuff, and you could probably make a pretty darn good rig that would fit in one of the smaller, more portable cases. That'd keep it from being to space consuming! My husband helped a friend of ours build a desktop designed to take on the go. Not as handy as a laptop because you still need mouse, keyboard, tower and monitor, but he's able to bring it to our place, or take it with him when he visits family. That could be an option depending on what sort of traveling you do!

I know you aren't worried about money, but what exactly is your budget? I think you'd get more bang for your buck going with an Alienware laptop. Can you link to the specific Razer laptop you're looking at and post the technical specifications?
