Steam is a small box, a controller and a screen, the SteamBoy combines those three things into one portable gaming system.
Steamboy has a quad-core CPU, 4GB RAM, a 32GB built-in memory card and a 5" 16:9 touchscreen doesn't sound like much, but it's certainly enough to play. Factor in Steam's new streaming functionality and the SteamBoy could be a must-have companion to a standard gaming machine.
I personally think they should have at least tested out how well people would receive their controllers that have slightly deviated from tradition, but they probably know what they are doing so I'm optimistic it will be a good product either way. I also don't think I like the physical design that much, but I am still very much looking forward to seeing it in action and in proper lighting.
This actually looks interesting. Though Android has taken most of the mobile/handheld gaming space with launch of devices like the Nexus 5, Kindle Fire and the NVIDIA SHIELD, this 'SteamBoy' might offer the Android devices a good competition. I firmly believe that this might run on Android itself. The design is fine and I hope it won't be too expensive as well. Also, PC gamers are already used to with Steam and this can unify the handheld and standard gaming experience for them. I will consider this device. I'd like to try one too. You can probably stream Steam games as well. It will be something like the SHIELD has, but would work on AMD and non-GTX cards and would be better integrated with Steam.
This looks so cool! I might actually get myself one. I've always loved playing on Steam! Playing it on a portable system is even better. But to me, this sort of looks like a copy of the PSP, so it isn't too big of a deal. But I do like how they are making Steam portable.
I would spend my money on a Steam Boy, It would be really cool playing Garry's mod or Rust while on a car trip or sitting on a bus. The Steam Boy by the way, is not being made by Valve but by another company. It kinda sucks how it uses A, B, X, and Y buttons because I'm used to the Playstation controller.
You know, I wouldn't touch an Ouya or any sort of Android console with a 50 foot pole (at least for now).
However, when it comes to Steam I'd certainly be a lot more open minded. Combining elements of PC gaming standards with portable devices is a great thought... at least in theory.
I thought the Nvidia Shield handheld was a pretty good Android console since it can stream PC games to the Shield, and also can play Android games and emulators on it.
