In an interview with MCV, SCEE President Andrew House commented on the price drop issue and his thoughts on Sony's stance moving forward. House notes: "the device has a 10 year lifecycle and [...] there are issues of cost and profitability. We will make that move on price when all those factors are aligned."
It seems that for eager PlayStation enthusiasts that are trying to save up for the big plunge, these factors are not aligned yet. "Would people buy more when they are cheaper? Of course," continues House. "But on the other hand there is an inherent marketing challenge. In Europe I think people do see the value of the machine, the Blu-ray and network services and take that all into consideration instead of just focusing on price. But we will look at price and will address it when the time is right."
From the sound of House's comments, Sony is obviously aware of the demand, but some greater force is at work preventing them from dropping the price. Perhaps that force is the European market, which apparently doesn't mind paying the extra cash.
We contacted representatives from Sony's US offices but did not receive an official comment. We'll just have to hope that US gamers without a PS3 will get better luck in the coming months.
