Hard times could be getting harder for GameStop, the massive store chain that buys and sells video games all across North America. Already challenged by gaming's increasingly digital future, GameStop now has to face the prospect of a new Xbox that will block used games, if recent reports are true.

But what about us? According to GameStop chief financial officer Rob Lloyd, the company's internal research shows that 60% of customers aren't interested in buying a console that won't play used games. 60%!

Speaking at Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference (as reported by VG247), Lloyd said he's skeptical that people will be interested in the new Xbox if rumors are true.

"Consumers want the ability to play pre-owned games, they want portability in their games; they want to play physical games," he said. "And to not have those things would be a substantial reason for them not to purchase a new console."

Following the source link on Kotaku, they have a poll which majority have voted no.

That's not how economics work. Think of it like this; if they don't do this, they get less money. Less money means less games. So on and so forth.

Economics actually works on demand and supply, you have to find out what the consumer want and supply it to them. They'll be taking a pretty great risk if they release it that way, I I honestly don't think it would take them long to release a version that plays used games.

Maybe free to play games where you pay for digital items like free games like League of Legends, Maple Story, Temple Run 2, CSR Racing, or monthly subscription $5 a month base gaming like Final Fantasy 11 MMO, and World of Warcraft is the way to go where there are no used games since they are either free to play because of sales of digital items, virtual money, or a monthly subscription which promises new levels, characters, items, and features on a weekly or monthly basis is the future of gaming.

I just don't get why Sony or MS don't open their own used game shop, give more money for trade ins and put the used games on cheaper sale than Gamestop. Problem solved.

That could cause some problems with video games publishers. Without stores like Gamestop, more people would buy new games.
And I think it would also be weird for them to sell used games.

It seems as though consoles are beginning to become PCs nowadays. they browse the internet, they have multi-core CPUs, they have hard drives, they have peripherals like keyboards and mouses, regular updates, you can install Linux on most of them...

Now we're hearing talk of registration codes attached to certain accounts, preventing used games from being exchanged. The next generation of consoles sound more like Macintosh Computers than gaming consoles.
