The Nintendo Switch may be region free, but it has other locks to keep Nintendo happy. First off the Switch will keep all save data on its internal storage, making you unable to transfer it in any way currently.

On top of that, if you use a SD card, that SD card is formatted to a single Switch device. Trying to use it in a different Switch device will cause this message:

"The microSD card is being used by another Nintendo Switch console or was used on this console before it was initialized. Delete the Nintendo Switch data on the microSD card to use it on this console. Save data, screenshots, and other data not related to Nintendo Switch won’t be deleted. You can remove the microSD card if you don’t want to use it on this console."

In short, if you need to change Switch devices, you might be screwed.

Perhaps their worry is that you might buy a game and put it on your friends' sd cards? I thought they were trying to tie games to accounts though. I think you can get your games back if you contact Nintendo, but that's no excuse for them being so behind the times.

Still don't see why Nintendo does this. I mean, it should be perfectly possible to allow save data transfers without moving the games themselves, and to then have a built in system to transfer the games over without duplicating them. This seems archaic.

seems like a trade off for giving us free region gameplay.
