The latest sign of rapid tablet ascendancy in streaming video consumption comes from the BBC (PDF), which tracks closely the performance of iPlayer, one of the most popular methods to view video content in the United Kingdom. The iPlayer is now generating more than 10 million video requests a day, up from 2.5 million a day in April 2009.

And what is really striking is how much of the demand growth comes from tablets. In February 2013, just 14% of iPlayer video requests originated from tablet devices but by February 2014, that portion had ballooned to 23%. Fascinatingly, even though a new generation of video game consoles had started to arrive at British households by February, the game console portion remained a flat 4% between February 2013 and February 2014.

I think that people use tablets to play streaming video like YouTube, Netflix, and iPlayer because tablets are cheaper because they can be bought for $50 or less online while console costs many hundreds more. Plus, the YouTube and other video streaming apps for game consoles are not very good.

Web browsers for tablets are also better at playing YouTube, Netflix, and Vimeo because many mobile web browsers like Chrome, Firefox are easy to use on a touchscreen, and touchscreen keyboard.

I think the low 4% usage of video streaming apps for game console proves that Game console gamers don't really want video streaming, and rather have good games.

Fine with me, game consoles are suppose to be about VIDEO GAMES! But the console makers seem to have forgotten this.

I feel most people use a cheap laptop or tablet with keyboard to connect it to their TV to stream video from Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube since it is easier to  use a keyboard and mouse or touchscreen to search for videos to watch.

I think Ouya still mostly is about video games with a gamepad controller. Ouya is a smaller game console company which probably does not have the time for also making a video and music streaming service when they still need to spend most of its time finding game makers to make games for their small console.
