At one time, app developers could earn tens of thousands of dollars for releasing tools built in hours. No more, reports the Financial Times:

Developers are already facing an uphill battle to earn revenue. According to a report released last month, 1.6 percent of developers earn more than the other 98.4 percent combined. And the bottom 47 percent of engineers earn less than $100 per month.

It is sad that most app developers don't make much cash since some of the apps might be pretty good, but they get out ranked by apps like Facebook, Skype, Instagram, and Angry Birds in the top apps charts, and app store search rankings.

I think one of the reason for apps not making much money these days is because people want free apps which are ad-free like Mozilla Firefox web browser for Android. Plus, there are millions of free ad-supported apps, and few people are willing to buy paid apps because there are already so many free apps which do the same thing.

Maybe the answer to making more than $100 a month is to make more apps to sell for $1, or use better banner ads which people maybe more interested in.
