Need for Speed was announced as always online recently, something that hasn't worked out too well for games in the past due to high traffic causing constant downtime as well as servers closing when the game ages, thus limiting the overall life of the game. This can often render the game unplayable, especially if your internet becomes unstable.
Ghost Games commented that the reason for Need for Speed taking an always online approach is because of a feature called Autolog.
“We've been pretty big with Autolog throughout the years and, as we know, it's a really powerful feature. This time around we're going to give it more of a human voice. It will treat your friend's play as if it is part of the narrative experience.”
Autolog is a system that takes all your friends race data and puts it up as records and times to beat. So effectively you are able to race your friends even if they are not online. However with the new game they are taking it even further, your friends play will be woven into the story itself - we're not exactly sure how just yet. But apparently they will need a constant internet connection to achieve this.
We are not sure why this isn't made as an option instead. There will be some people who don't have friends who play the game, thus rendering the feature useless, and why can people not decide to not use the feature, surely they could just generate AI times to compete with instead?
