Epic Games has just announced that the next Unreal Tournament will be completely free, and developed entirely in the open. Starting today, anyone can contribute. While the project will be led by senior Epic Games programmers, the game will be effectively developed by you.
Cool, never expected Unreal Tournament to be a free game because it is one of the best shooters for its time like other shooters like Doom, Wolfienstein 3D, and Call of Duty.
I read on a blog that members can create maps, and mods to sell on their online store, but members need to share their earnings with Unreal Tournament.
No, there's a very good chance the game won't be filled with ads. A lot of very successful free-to-play games don't have ads in them. See League of Legends, Team Fortress 2 and I believe Dota 2. They all get their money from microtransactions in the game. The logic behind it is to just make a game people want to play, they'll pay for it some way.
There would be a marketplace for buying and selling digital items like guns, maps, etc, but I think there would not be ads, or unrelated ads. But, there maybe ads which advertise Unreal's paid games.
I've been begging for a new UT game but this will probably either suck, or just not get off the ground.. kind of like what happened to Megaman Legends 3.
It is being develop and made by fans, and the UT Staff, so if there are enough dedicated fans it maybe good. Hopefully, UT would listen to fan feedback on improving the game.
