Right now video game companies are lobbying against a bill that protects independent business’ and gamers’ right to repair personal gaming consoles which VICE Motherboard reports. This bill if passed would kill manufactures hold on their repair monopoly and if passed it will force manufacturers to release tools and information required for fixing their products.

While I take it that the law is US only, I do hope that it does pass. I mean fixing some consoles is not that hard (like replacing the harddrive) but for other things it can be quite tricky.

So, how exactly would this work if it does pass? Anyone could try to fix their console at home and, due to not having the technical knowledge, break it even worse, and then the manufacturer would have to fix a bigger damage than the one that existed before the console owner had tried to fix it.

I don't think it's fair for the manufacturers. There's a reason why warranty laws prevent owners from trying to fix their devices.

The trouble is that there are power users (like me) who build computers and such who also feels that they have the technical knowledge/skills to open their consoles to replace something?

Also what about those 3rd party businesses who wants to provide a service to gamers without breaking the bank. Of course this would void your warranty but if it was out of warranty then it won't matter.

I like to think Apple is mostly driving this as you can't even touch their stuff without some kind of custom tools.
