You know, that new game where apparently the main character is an unrelenting psychopath that mows down civilians en masse and shoots the hell out of everything for the sake of it.
Do you think the game should or shouldn't be released? Is it right to make such a game? What do you think?
Personally, I don't like the game much, but I wouldn't ever say it shouldn't be released. Art and media is supposed to be controversial; there's a long history of film and TV pushes the boundaries of what's accepting (or just utterly ignoring them and going all out in the most over the top way possible). Why is something wrong for a game and not for anything else?
I think people need to get over the games = for kids bias once and for all.
I find the game distasteful , and the general idea that anyone would seek to profit from this sort of concept distasteful as well. But I agree that it shouldn't be banned. I've never been one to believe that games inspire violent behaviour- and in every case that I've recently seen where that could even be somewhat implied, the person was already mentally unstable to the point that violence would have been likely.
To me it's no worse then the games that the KKK make, or terrorists. Anyone with any sort of intelligence and a balanced mind will be unfazed, the people who just really want that sort of release through gameplay will enjoy it, and it'll fade into the background after a few months and be forgotten, like every other media controversy.
I think the worst case scenario is going to be some idiot going out there and actually committing crimes after having playing this and bringing a whole media shit storm down on the heads of rest of the gaming community.
I agree with what CM30 said. I'm not too interested in it (if only because it doesn't really have a story from what I can tell and unless the gameplay is exquisite it needs a decent storyline with a steady progression) but I play games like that. One of my favorite games was saints Row 2 (as well as the Third - 4 was crap) and that was violent as hell. Albeit the humor was the main appeal for me in those series but they serve as a good tension release when upset. Mindlessly killing civilians on a video game after a long day of dealing with rude, moronic, disgruntled customers is always a good tension releaser for me.
Also, not for nothing, but games like this have been around since the 70's. The only difference is as technology increases so do graphics.
This was my favorite game before the NES came out and even for a few years after. Granted, it is based on a movie where you play as a CG character, but as a kid I never knew that. All I saw was me severing heads off people with a sharp disc until they dissolved like a vampire in the sun. Oh, and by the way. this game still stood the test of time for me. Went back and plugged in my Intellivision a few years back and Stonewoot and I had a lot of fun with this game.
