Well, I don't know whether you're familiar with this, but there was an anime called "The Snow Queen" that was more or less loosely based on Andersen's fairy tale (I think it has the same name) and so was Frozen, or at least, there are loose connections. Anyway, this shows how both Japanese culture and Western culture deal with the similar topic and how they present it. Personally, I liked Frozen more.
Although the summary of the Snow Queen sounds lovely (two young friends, the evil Snow Queen, the perfect weapon, something similar was the idea behind Once Upon a Time, so whoever had liked that show could possibly be looking forward to this anime), in my opinion, it wasn't executed in the best way. In Frozen, although the story began with Elsa and Anna being little girls, there was something lively in it, something personal, something close. Here, however, it almost took until the end of the second episode for Kai to even see the Snow Queen (I'd expected something more instantaneous, for instance). There was so much development on the pre-Queen story - I'd not expected that, to be honest. And although it was nice seeing how village life functioned, it wasn't necessary for the development of the story and I had really hoped it wouldn't be insisted on. The real story starts somewhere in between episode three and four, more like episode three when the glass strikes Kai and he starts to change. Perhaps the first two were unnecessary? This slow progression had put me off a little. I'd had high hopes for the anime and the theme song was beautiful (the scenes chosen for it were simply dreamy).
But still, it should also be borne in mind that Frozen was created for 1.5 hour slot in average and anime series usually last longer, so it's natural that the development is a little slower.
