A new, giant survey of 10,000 app developers from around the world reveals a hugely depressing reality: your app will almost certainly not succeed. Maybe it's a given that in such a crowded market, standing out is a tough feat. But the numbers are terribly dismal: 2 percent of all app developers pull in over 50 percent of all app revenue—"The revenue distribution is so heavily skewed towards the top that just 1.6% of developers make multiples of the other 98.4% combined." A staggering 47% of app developers either make literally no money, or less than $100 per month, per app. Hardly Instagram money, or even decent-Instagram-knockoff money.

I wonder if making more apps in different categories like gaming, music, and video apps, and also releasing Apps for other operating systems like Windows, iOS, Android, Symbian, and Blackberry will make more money for App makers who are not making enough money now.

I think once more people buy more 8-12 inch tablets, and bigger screen devices like Smart TVs with the Android TV or Apple TV operating system, App makers will make more money from ads, and downloads because people with bigger screen use more apps, and play more games.

Using Apps on a small screen found on Smartphones, and Media players like the iPod Touch is not very enjoyable and fun compared to on a bigger screen.

Common sense people, you flood and saturate the market with something like apps then it becomes something that only becomes popular based on what you already done and word of mouth.

Kind of sad really as I'm sure some great apps are ignored.

Indeed, it is kind of sad that a lot of great apps are ignored because there are so many Apps in the App store by big companies like Facebook, EA and Zynga which has huge followings, and word of mouth from its many fans.

I wonder if App Store owners like Google, and Apple need to improve the earnings for App makers by also paying app maker a small monthly wage of $700, and the app maker also share a small percentage of their earnings like 5% of their App's monthly earnings with the App marketplace, so App makers still have enough money for rent, utilities, and food while also having enough time to make apps because they don't need to work a second job to support themselves when their app is not making much money for them.

There are also software which let you make mobile games, and App without knowing much coding, or no coding experience because of drag and drop user interfaces sort of like how a lot of websites thesedays run on WordPress, and Joomla where you don't need to know much or anything about coding to run them since webmasters just need to type, and publish articles with the editors in these website programs.

Well, not everyone would like to spend money and most of the people want free stuff.
So, I am not surprised to know that most of the app developers aren't making any money these days.

It's fault of the developer.
Ads = bigger reach because no credit card is required for usage of app.
But a lot of apps are too extreme with ads; for example game showing 2 video ads for every scene change, and then in-game ads on top and bottom of screen in gameplay.
People become annoying, and remove the app.

Paying for app was a lot more good.

I agree ads is a really bad idea for smartphone. Paying on something like for using the app, in-game credits, donation is more reasonable.

Maybe donating money to the app maker or donating some of your phone's CPU, RAM, and video chip resources to help the game maker mine for Cryptocurrency like bitcoin and other cryptocurrency can be a good idea.

I feel it would be good if you can control how much RAM and CPU you can use to help an app developer mine for cryptocurrency. If you like the app a lot, the user can increase the amount of RAM and CPU resources the app use to mine for Cryptocurrency. But, if the app is not good to use, it is possible to set the app to use a lower amount of RAM and CPU resources, or disable Cryptocurrency mining if the app is very bad.

The flood really makes it difficult to impossible to find good games and make it difficult for actually good apps to find traction.

I don't believe developers should use only ads. Subscriptions are a good way to attract people and not to mention that they could use some donations too. Ads only are not efficient for a app developer.

Maybe using e-mail newsletters can be a good way of making money by occasionally sending promotional e-mails saying you are selling your app or game for 10% off, and also selling website ad links to bigger websites on your e-mail newsletters to help earn money online.

Some websites, and apps also make money from surveys and polls where the website and app may pay people some money for taking the survey or poll like the website and app makes 70% of the earnings from paid polls and surveys, and the person taking the poll or survey maker 30% of the earnings.
