With windows, this week alone I've dealt with some PCs that came in, when you booted it up it asked what kind of keyboard layout you want it, then it leads into the OS recovery options screen. Which from there you can select one option which gives you a rollback option as a OS start up otherwise it somehow gives a clone of volume 3 OS install.

In the end, all you can do is back up the data, wipe the HDD/SSD and reinstall W10.

If your not sure about the updates by windows, you can try disabling automatic windows update. This may help specially in controlling whether you want an update or not. Also some updates are scanned regularly that is why there are times that your device seemed slow, these updates are downloaded in the background that's why sometimes you don't have an idea what's in the download status.

Correction: forced beta tester.
Most Linux distro's offer a testing and even nightly/untested repo branch alongside the stable one, but it's up to the user to decide whether they want to use another branch or not and can switch anytime.
I even switched from stable to testing in Manjaro 2 days ago.....and effectively destroyed Dolphin (file manager, not the emulator) along my way.
