Got any questions about Luigi's Mansion 2? Well hopefully this FAQ I wrote will answer them. It says where to find the solutions to various common problems, how to unlock things in the ScareScraper and how to do all sorts of basic actions, so read on to hopefully find out how to fix various common issues you may have with the game.

General Questions

What type of game is Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon?

It's an action adventure game. What does this mean? It means the main gameplay comes down to three things:

1. Exploring ominous deserted mansions in various interesting locations.

2. Solving puzzles with the Poltergust 5000, Strobulb and Dark Light.

3. Fighting and capturing ghosts

It is not a platformer like the New Super Mario Bros or 3D Mario series and Luigi doesn't have the ability to jump in this game (except to avoid attacks when capturing ghosts).

In theory the game is based more on puzzle solving than anything, but it's arguably also a bit more combat heavy than the likes of the first game as well.

Is this game a sequel?

Yes, it's a sequel to Luigi's Mansion, an early Gamecube game released about ten years ago. However, it's a significantly improved sequel with many new features and much more content.

How does this game stack up to the original? In what ways is it similar/different?

See my comparison review below for information on the game and how it compares to the original:

http://nintendo3dscommunity.com/topic/11032-luigis-mansion-vs-luigis-mansion-dark-moon-the-comparison/

If you need a concise summary though:

A: It's much longer and has much more replay value than the first game
B: Puzzles and game mechanics are much more complex
C: Enemies are mostly more varied (with the debatable exception of bosses)
D: The game is much more difficult (you may need a walkthrough for some puzzles)

If you liked the original, buy this one no questions asked. If you didn't like the original, at least rent it due to how much better it is and how much better the core game mechanics are.

Is this game called Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon or Luigi's Mansion 2?

It's called both. The former is the game's official title in the US, the latter is the game's name in Japan, Europe and Australia.

This site uses both names interchangably. Partly because some members and staff are American and some are British.

Are there any other regional differences I should be aware of?

Yes. The ScareScraper is called The Thrill Tower in UK copies of the game.

Other major changes to keep in mind are:

The Pixelator is called the Pixelshifter in the UK
Poltergeists are called Boffins in the UK version.
The Shrewd Possessor is called the Scornful Possessor in the UK
Doggone Key is now called 'That Dog the Key Hog' in the UK version
Play Catch is known as 'Ghosty in the Middle'
A Nightmare to Remember is called 'Shatter the Illusion'.

So if you see one of the terms above and it sounds unfamiliar, that's what it means.

If you need a full list of all localisation changes, this article lists all of them:

http://nintendo3dsdaily.com/nintendoarticles/luigis-mansion-localised-differences-between-the-european-and-us-versions-of-luigis-mansion-2/

I'd also advise anyone using a walkthrough to use Find and Replace to replace the US terms with the British terms if it makes things clearer, since an absolute TON of rooms have been renamed between versions.

Where can I get the soundtrack to this game?

You can download most of the game's soundtrack here:

http://nintendo3dscommunity.com/files/file/197-luigis-mansion-dark-moon-music-including-credits-theme/

It doesn't include all songs yet, but it will in the future.

Is there a sound test?

No, although many players wish there was. I know it'd make finding music on Youtube easier.

How good is the game's music?

Excellent. Mostly made of remixes of about five to ten set themes, but these themes are super catchy regardless.

How long should this game take to beat?

I'd say between 15 and 20 hours to reach the final boss and defeat him/see the ending, and maybe another 20 or so to get all the three star ranks and gems. It might then take another 10-20 hours to get all the ScareScraper bosses, maybe more if life sucks and you keep getting repeat encounters with the same ghosts.

Of course, time taken all depends a lot on both your skill level and whether you use a walkthrough, so a bad player can easily take about 70 hours to beat everything or perhaps even more. Not to mention that some puzzles and gem locations are really hard to figure out without a walkthrough...

So it all varies. And ScareScraper adds a lot of extra play time if you can find good people to play the game with.

All in all, I'd say it should take around the following amounts of time:

5-16 hours (single run, only main levels, up to end of final boss battle. If I did the game as best as could it would take me about 4 and a half hours).

16-30 hours (with secret levels, Boos and gems, with walkthrough or prior knowledge)

30-40 hours (with three star ranks, maybe ScareScraper bosses)

50 + hours (with either no walkthrough, mediocre player or diversions).

Story Mode Questions

How come E Gadd tells me to fight King Boo after Terrifying Invasion? Do I need to fight him again?

You don't need to fight King Boo twice. The reason E Gadd tells you to fight him afterwards is because technically, you don't need to beat King Boo to unlock the secret mission here (the last Boo you need is from Paranormal Chaos). So I suspect that story wise, this mission is meant to take place prior to the fight with the Tough Possessor and King Boo.

This may also be the case with Severe Infestation, since you can still see the Shrewd/Scornful Possessor trying to kill innocent creatures with bombs if you look through the window near the Maintenance Room in said mission.

How do secret missions actually work?

They're sort of like time trials where you have to defeat randomly spawned ghosts in the mansions you've already conquered. Well they're kind of random, the ghosts spawned in each room seem to be based on preset patterns the game cycles between each run. And the rooms where ghosts appear are set to be ones easily accessible from the last room you cleared out (so if ghosts first appeared in the Gloomy Manor Lobby, then the next two sets might appear in the Dining Room and Kitchen).

How do I unlock the secret missions, E Gadd medals or other stuff?

Look here for how to unlock everything in Luigi's Mansion 2:

http://nintendo3dsdaily.com/nintendoarticles/luigis-mansion-2dark-moon-tips-cheats-and-unlockables/

How do I beat a certain boss in Luigi's Mansion 2?

Read my boss guide here, it gives strategies and tips for every single boss in the game:

http://nintendo3dscommunity.com/topic/11072-luigis-mansion-dark-moon-boss-guide/

How do I solve a specific puzzle/beat a specific mission in Luigi's Mansion 2?

Ask on the forums here in the Question and Answer section. Or wait until my guide comes out, if it ever does. Or look it up on Youtube.

How do I make the Strong Poltergeist appear in Treacherous Mansion?

Take the book in the study and put it in the bookcase. He'll then run off, hide the door to the Space Exhibit and be ready to battle within.

Where do I use the special compass in the Old Clockworks?

When past the barrier, go right until you see a mound of sand towards the south of the area. Press X when the icon pops up.

How do I defeat the Three Sisters?

Use your Strobulb on the one not holding the mirror in front of them to stun said sister, then use the Poltergust 5000. Repeat until they're defeated.

Where can I find the various gems?

A full list of all gem locations can be found in my guide here:

http://nintendo3dsdaily.com/nintendoarticles/luigis-mansion-2-gem-locations-and-guide/

Where can I find all the Boos?

See this Mario Wiki page:

http://www.mariowiki.com/List_of_Boos_in_Luigi%27s_Mansion:_Dark_Moon

How can I get three stars in missions?

Well, on a basic level, it all depends on how quickly you finish, how much gold you get and how little damage you take. A good guide is here:

http://nintendo3dsdaily.com/nintendoarticles/luigis-mansion-dark-moon-three-star-ranks/

If you need a specific formula, a guide on GameFAQs says it's this:

Ghosts captured * 120 + collected treasure - time in seconds - health lost * 6.

So let's say you're playing Gloomy Manor. You're in mission 4 and get 10 ghosts, 1500 gold, finish in 4:50 and lose ten health.

This would work out like as follows:

10 X 120 + 1500 - (4 X 60 + (50)) - (10 X 6)

Which would equal to 2350 points.

You'd then check out A-4's requirements from a list. This is 1400, so your score is higher and hence you'd get three stars.

Here's a list of individual requirements and things:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/3ds/632930-luigis-mansion-dark-moon/faqs/66895

Hope that helps.

What happens to King Boo after the ending?

No one knows. I presume he escapes in time for Mario Kart Wii U though, he's usually a playable character in home console versions of that series.

Where's the ScareScraper in universe?

Hard to say. I presume it's in Evershade Valley along with the rest of the mansions, but some people on sites like Mario Wiki have made the point it might be in the Paranormal Dimension (where you fight the Tough Possessor and King Boo).

Is [so and so] in this game?

Maybe? Here's a list:

Mario - Yes
Peach - No
Daisy - No
Wario - No
Waluigi - No
Bowser - No
Pretty much anyone from the mainstream Mario series bar Luigi, King Boo, E Gadd, Mario and Boos - No

Are all Bosses Possessors?

Sort of. Sort of meaning that all normal bosses bar King Boo are Possessors, but they all have very different attack patterns. All mini bosses on the other hand are different though.

Are there any portrait ghosts?

Well technically no, because the whole 'ghosts in portraits' thing doesn't exist in this game. I think we're gonna need a better term when Luigi's Mansion 3 rolls around.

If you mean 'are there any human like ghosts?', then the answer is technically yes; The Three Sisters. These ghosts were likely human at one point in time and act like the portrait ghosts from the first game.

Other than that, not really. There are different types of Poltergeists/Boffins as mini bosses, which act a bit like a portrait ghost does and fill the same role. And the Big Boo boss is basically Boolossus 2.0, but very few 'ex human' ghosts exist in this game.

ScareScraper/Multiplayer Questions

How can I play the ScareScraper part of the game? The option doesn't seem to be there.

You need to beat mission A-4, Visual Tricks first. This is so you know how to use the Strobulb, Poltergust and Dark Light beforehand. You don't need to do anything else though, so it's very possible to fight Gobbers, Creepers, Sneakers, Polterpups, Strong/Super enemies and shielded enemies in the ScareScraper long before you're taught how to defeat them or encounter them in the main adventure.

Do I always get new boss ghosts when playing alone?

No. It's a myth commonly found online based on the idea that every boss ghost encountered in the ScareScraper is one that at least one player doesn't already have in the vault. People's guess was that if you're the only player in the game then any ghost you encountered had to be a new one.

It's not the case. No, it's random what ghosts you encounter as ScareScraper bosses when playing alone and the ones you currently have in the vault doesn't affect this.

How can I detect traps?

In single player they don't exist. In multiplayer, use the Poltergust on a vase. If it shakes, then it's not a trap.

You have no prior way to detect curse gas or a trap rug.

How can I remove a curse?

Use the Dark Light on the cursed player.

How can I get rid of a vase on my head?

Have another player pull it off by vacuuming the tassle. Or walk into a suit of armour, being struck by its sword will break the vase at the cost of some health.

How can I get out of a rug trap?

You can't, another player player has to pull one of the tassles in the corner to get you out.

And if the other players are too stupid to figure this out?

Die. I know, it sucks, but any traps or curses kind of vanish when Luigi dies/gets knocked out. Then just have someone revive you.

How can I revive another player?

Press X when near them.

Rush mode is too difficult. How can I survive in one piece?

Don't consider it a race. It does require some speed, but you are pretty much guaranteed to fail if you try and run blindly through the rooms looking for an exit. Instead, examine various objects for timepieces and slowly check out the map for the exit instead.

How do I unlock Surprise Mode?

Beat one ScareScraper of each type (Hunter, Rush and Polterpup).

How do I create an Endless ScareScraper?

Beat a 25 floor ScareScraper of the type you want to make an Endless version of. So if you want to make an endless floor Hunter ScareScraper, beat a 25 floor Hunter one.

Do I have to unlock each mode to play it?

No, as far as I know you can play any ScareScraper you like online regardless of whether it's Endless, in Surprise mode or anything else.

Where can I find help for each mode?

If you need help in Hunter mode, here's my guide to that:

http://nintendo3dscommunity.com/topic/11065-luigis-mansion-dark-moon-hunter-mode-guide/

If you need help in Polterpup mode, check Lord Regal's guide here:

http://nintendo3dscommunity.com/topic/11070-luigis-mansion-dark-moon-polterpup-mode-guide/

No guide for Rush or Surprise mode unfortunately, we all kind of suck at that.

You have seriously broken this game down to some very specific detail. Have you considered making an E-guide? Like in PDF format or something. An "official N3DSC guidebook" , if you will. Imagine how popular that would become.

Nicely done, I took the time to read about the region changes specifically since that interest me when it comes to games using the same language (US and UK version I mean.).
