TBH it’s not a “for realz” translation of the name. It’s that bullshit Japan likes to do in anime related stuff where they give something an English name, but associate it with random bullshit kanji. For example, you’ll see a character have a sword called “Heart of the Bleeding Sword”, but they’ll give it the kanji “春雨” (summer rain) but put the katakana of “ハートアブザブリーぢングソード” as furigana, despite the fact the real furigana would say “harusame” (はるさめ).

So the character’s name is actually Accelerator, but the author says the kanji for his name is “一方通行”, despite it having nothing to do with the real way to say his name. They pull the same stunt with Last Order with the kanji for her name being 打ち止め (uchitome) but say you read it as ラストオ-ダ, or Last Order.

Long story short: A Certain Scientific Accelerator is the real translation (unless someone wants to get super petty over science vs scientific), and the kanji of 一方通行 being inconsequential to the title.

I’m so glad they announced it after Index and Railgun got season 3’s. I was gonna be pissed if they ignored those two and went straight for Accelerator
 
I have never heard of it but I now know that some people are eagerly waiting for it. It is supposed to be the very famous spin off.

And reading is "shun'u" for word use, but for female name use "harusame" is correct.

I saw this with ドラゴンポール超, 超 reading is "cho", but for title it become "super", but it is same meaning.
And 夜神月＝yagami light, "yagami" is correct, but "light" reading way is "gatsu", "getsu", or "tsuki", and meaning become "moon" or "month".

I do not watch anime a lot. (´・ω・｀)

Idk what I was thinking with Summer cuz I know 夏 is summer. Definitely a slip, and I was probably thinking of Mori Summer from Chuunibyou.

It's definitely kind of a silly trope they pull with this stuff, and it got lampooned in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, or at least in the light novel. You have a character trying to get non-anime fans to read his light novel rough draft, and the girl who doesn't know anything was ripping on him on the random kanji that had nothing to do with the English name of his character's weapon.

"Where the hell did you get the reading for this kanji, and why is it in English?"

"Idk, that's just how it is".

Normally in events of kanji having a uncommon reading, it get attached a furigana.
Sometimes only first time, sometimes every time.

Here in Japan English is seen as the language of coolness.
For example in game 準備したの？ does not sound same cool as ARE YOU READY?.

Mostly I see furigana on anything that kids would be reading and don't know a lot of kanji.

I already know Japan's fondness of using random English words. We rip of weaboos using random Japanese words for shits and giggles, but Japan's just as bad at times. Just look at a ton of J-Pop songs with random Engrish, and scifi anime gets especially bad with the copious amounts of random English words. In A Certain Scientific Railgun they were talking about AIM dispersion fields, and AIM being short for "an involuntary movement". They didn't translate it into Japanese, they just assumed the audience knew what any of those words mean.

This is true for both.
Overseas people misuse Japanese as much as Japanese misuse English.
Like saying "senpai" (先輩) to young person, "sayonara" (さよなら) to someone they will see after few hour, and thinking "kaizo" (改造) meaning impossible to beat game level.

I've never seen anyone use kaizo, and some people think senpai just means upperclassman, and more think it's a word that meansamong the lines of "that guy I have a crush on", since a lot of shoujo always has the "I hope senpai notices me" that's become meme status.

先輩（senpai）＝senior
後輩（kouhai）＝junior
少年（shounen）＝little boy
少女（shoujo）＝little girl

This is why I think learn Japanese via anime is NG. ｗ

"Kaizo" is word gamer use for ROM hacking.
It mean "restructure", so use same asset that is already available, and put on a different place.
 
TBH they don’t really learn the language, they just learn random words and sprinkle it into their sentences.

And I know what those words mean. I just meant I’ve never seen weabs use kaizo, or know it exists.
