When looking at the holiday season this year, I really have to wonder what Nintendo was thinking. Sure, Mario games sell and will help sell the Wii U system, but I really feel as though the over-saturation of Mario in the market will only hurt sales of each title individually.
Around November, when I am considering what games to buy, I can choose New Super Mario Bros U, New Super Mario Bros 2, Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion 2, Nintendoland (the game as shown at E3 was mostly Mario), and heck, Mario Tennis is something I was still on the fence about. Guess I won't even bother with that one now as I need to start saving up!
Keep in mind that I (like many consumers) will also be purchasing a Wii U and probably non-Nintendo games with the same entertainment/Christmas budget. There is simply no WAY average people could responsibly purchase all of those games. And even IF you did, when would you play all of them? You would have to pick and choose and make others wait. And the longer those games wait, the less likely I am to ever pick them up.
Considering how similar the Wii U and 3DS main Mario games are, why didn't they just combine them? Make certain levels coin themed and then put in all the innovations for the Wii U version. And with all the other Nintendo franchises, why not try to space these games out and maybe do more games featuring different characters?
I think the only reason we are seeing this flux is that production got too far behind on Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion 2 and now Nintendo is playing catch up, even though consumers don't need all the extra titles. Spaced out, I might have bought them all, but 2012 has WAY too much of this one, single franchise.
