There's something about the young male psyche that loves the idea of jumping inside a hulking humanoid war machine and wreaking havoc. It's not too surprising that mecha stories are some of the most popular and common franchises in the anime and manga industries. But which ones stand at the top of the mecha mountain?

This list is an attempt to answer that question, but before the list could be compiled some rules had to be laid down. First, as usual, we're talking only about mecha franchises that are commercially available in North America. Second, we're only including franchises that started with original works. Shows like Robotech and Voltron may be beloved in the U.S., but they were cobbled together from other anime series so they don't count. And finally - to avoid any confusion on what exactly a mecha anime/manga is - we only consider franchises where a good part of the story involves giant robots that people hop into and control. As for the criteria for ranking, we factored in originality, quality, popularity, and longevity.
